    George Hughes died at his home Feb. 27 after an illness of but three days, at the age of 70 years and one month. He bad been in his usual health when he wee taken with a sudden attack of stomach trouble, from which he never recovered, and his sudden death cast a gloom over the entire community. The funeral was held March 2d at one o'clock from the house and from the Canada Hill school-house at two. Rev. Seymour Moose officiating and the long line of friends who followed the remains to the cemetery showed the esteem in which he was held. Besides his wife he leaves an aged mother, Mrs Geo. Wagner of Reed's Corners and three sons, Jacob Hughes of Wayland, Frank and William Hughes of Sparta, and two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Hamsher and Mrs. Henry Dieter of Swainsville, one brother, Thomas Hughes of Dansville and two half brothers, Jacob and John Wagner of Reed's Corners to mourn his loss.

    The family of the late Geo. Hughes wish to publicly thank their friends and neighbors and all those who so kindly assisted them in any way during the illness and after the death of their father, and especially to the Carney Hollow choir for the beautiful selections rendered on that occasion, and to Mr. Peter Harvey for his kindness in bringing the choir.

    Death Claims the Oldest Resident of Sparta.

    The death of Mrs. Elisabeth Wagner occurred at the home of her son John A. Wagner at Reed's Corners Wednesday evening, May 27t, at the advanced age of 93 years.

    Elisabeth Fronk was the daughter of George Fronk and Mary Dutter, and was born in Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pa., Jan. 24, 1814. She came with her father to Dansville in 1832 and settled in the eastern part of the town on the old homestead now owned by George Kidd. In early life she married Thomas Hughes, who died nearly fifty years ago, and by whom she had seven children, six of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. They were Thomas and George Hughes, Paulena, wife of Jacob Hampshire, Mary, wife of Jonas Dieter, Katie, wife of Jacob Zeigenfuss, and Elizabeth, wife of Henry Dieter. She afterwards married George Wagner, who died three years ago, and by whom she had two children, John A. Wagner and Jacob Wagner. She attained her fifth generation, and she leaves 24 grandchildren, nearly 50 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

    She was of that sturdy Dutch ancestry that emigrated from Pennsylvania to this part of New York in the early years of the 19th Century, to whom we owe our homes, our liberty and our pleasant surroundings to-day. Her father died at the advanced age of 98 years. She had been a member of the German Lutheran church for many years. She was a good Christian, and she patiently waited the time when she should lay down the cross for the crown. She had been in her usual health until about two weeks before her death when she had a stroke of paralysis from which she never recovered. She was the oldest inhabitant of the town of Sparta and so the staff and mantle of the patriarch is handed to another to wear but a few miles on the journey of life.

    The funeral services were held at the Reed's Corners church on Sunday at 2 p. m., Rev. S. E. Moose officiating, and she was laid to rest on a comer of the Old homestead in the cemetery on Canada Hill. She leaves to mourn her loss three sons, John A. Wagner and Jacob Wagner of Reed's Corners and Thomas Hughes of Dansville, and two daughters Mrs. Jacob Hampshire of Dansville and Mrs. Henry Dieter of Swains, and one brother, Samuel Fronk of Dansville.
