    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Military Service: Jun 1778, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, USA; American Revolution (US) Northumberland Co. Militia - Ranger Discharge Oct 1781

    Notes:

As taken from David Haynes' pension record of 03Jan1833 at which time he was living in So.Dansville, Steuben Co., NY: At the commencement of the Revolutionary War, his father resided with his family on the headwaters of the Chillisquaque Creek in the County of Northumberland in the state of Pennsylvania, about a mile and a half south of the Indian path leading to Muncy Creek. His father purchased for each of his five sons a rifle and encouraged them to hunt for the purpose of becoming expert in the use of arms, and of becoming acquainted with the woods in that vicinity. In June 1777 his house was converted into a garrison and a company of militia was stationed partly there and partly at ?Neesip garrison about seven miles distant. The Captain of the company, John Chatham, remained at the latter place. The other detachment was under the command of Lt. Fulton and Ensign Marshall. During almost everyday for about a month, this applicant acted as their pilot through the woods. They did not fall in with any Indians and had no skirmishes. In June 1778 he enlisted as a ranger under Col. James Murray, who had command of those forces in that section of Northumberland County. He immediately commenced duty reconnoitering the Indian path from Muncy to Fishing Creek, a distance of about twenty-five miles, and was constantly engaged in that service for about eleven months, when he had permission from Col. Murray to return home. He was absent from the service for about three months. He then returned and continued on in the same duty for about a year and five months or until some time in January of 1781. During this time they did not meet any Indians, excepting once, when he saw an Indian on horseback, carrying a piece of venison. he pursued and the Indian threw down the venison and escaped very fast. On his way home after he had been discharged, he and his brother were arrested by some men belonging to a regiment commanded by Col. John White, on the ground that they were deserters. They obtained his brother as a hostage, and also his own arms and equipment, and suffered him to go. He went to Sudbury and saw Col. Murray and Lt.Col. William Hunter. He received from the former a certificate,(which he has long since lost,) stating that he and his brother served faithfully for two years and four months, with which he returned to his brother and got him discharged. In the month of October 1781, he enlisted at the city of Lancaster for three months as a substitute for one William Sawyers, in a regiment of Pennsylvania militia in a company of which the officers were Capt. Bradley and Lt. Barnett(Lancaster Co.,9thBn,7thClass). All of the other officers in the regiment now recollected are Col. George Ross, Major Katy, Capt. Williams, Allen, Scott. The regiment marched through Dowenstown, and through Bucks and Chester Counties, with the purpose of going to New York City, but for some cause which he did not understand, they stopped at the place called Four Lanes End. After remaining there several days, they returned to Lancaster, where he was discharged, having served about one month. The foregoing is the best account which he can give of his service, as his memory has been very much impaired by a fit of the palsy. He can not recollect the day on which any of his terms commenced or concluded. There is a record of his age in a book belonging to his father, which he supposed, though he does not know certainly, to be in Pa. He continued to reside on the headwaters of the Chillisquaque till 1793, when he removed to Geneseo, now Livingston County, New York. He resided there until 1822, when he removed to his present residence and has resided there(South Dansville, Steuben Co., NY) since. After the above was written(1833) David removed in 1837 to Jackson County, Michigan.

Margaret (daughter of Second Lieutenant John Ewart and Mary Dunwoody) was born on 18 Apr 1769 in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, USA; died on 20 Apr 1836 in Dansville, Steuben Co., New York, USA. When a young man John came to America crossing the ocean in several weeks. Records first find John Ewart in the American Revolution as a Second Lieutenant in the Company(Seventh) commanded by Capt John Simpson, as part of the 1st Battalion commanded by Col. Hunter of the Northumberland County Militia. This Company was organized 25Mar1776. He is also listed as a ranger in the Northumberland County Militia during the American Revolution in 1778 and after.

20Oct1786, John Ewart of Northumberland County,Pa is granted Letters of Administration on the estate of Andrew Camble: Securties James McLees and Philip Upp.

John Ewart was in Williamsburg possibly as early as 1792). However, we do know that in Sept 1794 when Daniel Kelly and John Harrison came up from PA to look for land. "[John] Harrison's ague came on again, and a daughter of John Ewart, who resided at Williamsburgh, was also down with it." This would assume then that the Ewart's were already settled in at Williamsburg before Sep 1794, before later moving to Lakeville.

In Spring 1794 (Livingston County History) he apparently came with his son-in-law to Geneseo (then Ontario County, New York) making the journey in wagons. At this time Geneseo was a wilderness with only a few white settlers. He eventually selected a tract of land near the village known as Lakeville, and assisted in organizing the First Presbyterian church in the town of Geneseo, of which he was appointed one of the Elders. He resided near Lakeville but a few years, then sold his land and bought for four dollars a tract of 100 acres in the southern part of the town. A hewed log house and a few acres of cleared land constituted his available estate. Here he resided till his death in about 1812. A few years before his death, John's younger brother, George, and his family came to Groveland.

1790 census-Northumberland Co.,PA-"John Duart" - 2 males>16, 0 males <16, 3 females. ...living next to Widow Clemons, Hugh Lemond, Peter Smith, and near all the (Haynes)Haines's(Joseph, Jonathan, John, James, and David)

1800 census-Geneseo,Ontario Co.,NY-"John Ewert" - 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 1 female<10, 1 female 16-25. (NOTE: the numbers appear to be off by one column - if so it should be - 1 male 26-44(Samuel), 1 male 45+(John), 1 female 26-44(?) --- this leaves open that Mary may not have come to Geneseo and is buried in PA and the female 26-44 is a daughter of John or second wife) ...living next to Benjamin Squires, Thomas Austin, John Hutchin (only 48 heads of household in the town of Geneseo in 1800)

1810 census-Geneseo,Ontario Co.,NY-"Jno Evarts" (written over "Jno Ewarts") - one male 26-45(Samuel), 1 male 45+(John), 1 female 45+(Mary or second wife?) ..next to Benjamin Squires, Nathan Wheeler, Josiah Wheeler, David Warner.

The Ewart family, although from Armagh County, Ireland, where of Scottish ancestry.

The Ewart's grave is located in Temple Hill Cemetery, next to the main road(Rte 20), a large white marble marker has the insrciption of his son Samuel, and next to this are two illegable markers, believed to be that of John and his wife. His son Samuel and his family has another monument in the center of the cemetery - most likely were Samuel is actually buried (or moved from his orginal location).

John married Mary Dunwoody on 18 Oct 1763 in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, USA. Mary (daughter of John Dunwoody and Susanna Criswell) was born est 1746 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania, USA; died about 1820 in Geneseo, Livingston Co., New York, USA; was buried in Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, Livingston Co., New York, USA. Notes:

Also Mary's sister married Hugh Mcwilliams whose sister married Robert Curry, the other LT in the same company with John Ewart in Northumberland Co.

  1. 8.  Joseph Haynes was born on 18 Oct 1683 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts, USA (son of Thomas Haynes and Sarah Rae); died in 1760 in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania, USA.

    Notes:

Joseph (Christopher) HAYNES August 10, 1994, From a letter by Charles R. Clemson, 554 State Street, Lancaster, PA, 17603, to Barbara Hughes, Box 6049, Canyon Lake, CA 92380, dated 9 Nov. 1990. Re: Joseph Haynese NOT Christopher Haynes. Theory based on research of Paulette Haynes, of Anderson, Indiana, that a Haynes family history was compiled by one Col. Milton Haynes (1814-1867), in 1848 or 1850, mentioned Joseph Haynes, but also with the name of Christopher. It is suggested that someone later may have altered the MS by lining out Joseph and writing in Christopher on page one, thereby creating the misapprehension. The family history of Haynes, by Col. Milton Haynes, is located in the Tennessee State Archives, Nashville, TN. There is persuasive argument that Joseph is the proper first name. But, the letter does not mention if Christopher is the proper middle name of our subject. From the Family History of Vey Lenore Sawyer McNally, Idaho Falls, Idaho: Vital records of Massachusetts; N.H Genealogical Records; District of Maine, York County, v9, pg112; Pioneers of Massachusetts, by Charles Henry Pope (1965), pg518; Haynes Eagle, v2, pg 57; Pioneers of York Maine, pg98,99; June 5, 1994, From Noris R. Haynes, Germantown, TN The family history compiled by Bertha Owen Brockman, 2110 Linden St., Pine Bluff, AR. indicates Joseph or Christopher Haynes. From the MS of James D. Cook, dated 15 February 1943, Centersville, Tennessee. Christopher was tall, spare made, six feet tall with blue eyes. Christopher was a dissenting Presbyterian, or non-conformist, then called a Seceder. From the 1745 to 1760, he lived at Harrisburg, PA, where he died and was buried. He was a carpenter by trade. (This statement is probably from the Haynes Family History, by Milton Haynes, 1814-1867. It has appeared in several collections almost verbatim.)

Joseph Haynes baptized 18 October 1683 Salem Village was named in his father's will dated 1709. He was perhaps a Private in Captain Rumsey's Colonial Militia in 1715. He was named in his brother Benjamin's 1723 will as owning land in Mannington (Salem County) New Jersey. A deed was made in 1732 for 500 acres in Mannington to Joseph Haynes and later sold to Hance Bilderbeck but apparently was never recorded. The last official record was possibly when he acted as a witness in 1742.

    Birth:
This Joseph Haynes in the Salem records may or may not be the father of the children listed below, nothing has been proven to link them.

Joseph married Hannah Clemson about 1717 in Delaware Co., Pennsylvania, USA. Hannah (daughter of James Clemson) was christened on 3 Aug 1692 in Tettenhall, Staffordshire, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Hannah Clemson was christened on 3 Aug 1692 in Tettenhall, Staffordshire, England (daughter of James Clemson).

    Notes:

August 10, 1994, From a letter and postscript, dated 9 November 1990, by Charles R. Clemson, 554 State Street, Lancaster, PA, 17603. Re: Joseph Haynes NOT Christopher Haynes. Makes a persuasive argument "without the two proofs" that Hannah Clemson is the wife of Joseph Haynes.
