    He was one of the original members of the First Congregational Church. His wife united with the church the following year.

    He was commissioned as lieutenant, July 25, 1710; as colonel, April 21, 1742, by which title he was afterwards known; also as Justice of the Peace in 1711 and 1729.

    He had quite a large number of slaves, and, long before the revolution, liberated and and settled them in some woodlands in Dartmouth, MA. (Dartmouth Woods). There is a ridge of land in that town which was settled almost wholly by African Americans who were the descendants of the emancipated slaves of Colonel Richmond

    General solicitor in 1667-69-70-72. In 1676 he and his men captured seven Indians during King Philip's War and condemned some of them to death as Clerk of the Court.     John ROGERS was baptized on 6 April 1606 at Watford, co. Northamptonshire, England. He was the son of Thomas ROGERS [Mayflower Pilgrim] and Alice COSFORD. John ROGERS John Rogers probably came to Plymouth about 1630 with the last of the Pilgrims to leave the Separatist enclave. He was first taxed in 1633 at Plymouth and on 20 Oct 1634 he bought a lot at Duxbury from Edmund Chandler. With his brother Joseph and others, he had a grant of fifty acres at Marshfield 6 April 1640. At Duxbury he was a surveyor of highways in 1644, deputy to the General Court in 1657, and constable in 1666. As an "ancient freeman" of the colony, he was granted land at Taunton on 3 June 1662. He had another hundred acres on Connecticut (Titicut) River in 1667 and in 1673 another hundred acres on the northeast side of Taunto. He is call "weaver" in a deed conveying one acre in Duxbury to Wrestling Brewster in 1680. His will dated 26 Aug 1691 was proved 20 Sept 1692. He married Anna CHURCHMAN on 16 April 1639 at Plymouth. John ROGERS died between 26 August 1691 and 20 September 1692 at Duxbury.

    Notes:

    Folk Figure. Long acclaimed as the first child of European parents to be born in New England. Born the eldest child of noted Mayflower passengers Priscilla Mullins and John Alden in the Plymouth colony (present day Massachusetts). She was described by those who knew her as “a woman of great character, and fine presence, very tall and handsome." She married William Pabodie on December 26, 1644 and settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts where he served as town clerk. The couple had thirteen children before moving to Little Compton, Rhode Island. She died there at about age 94. Among her descendants was the poet most credited with making famous her parents through his work, 'The Courtship of Miles Standish,' Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Her name has also been recorded as Elizabeth Paybody.
