    • Military Service: 10 Sep 1814, Rutland Co., Vermont, USA; War of 1812 (US) Alarm at Plattsburg(NY) Capt Hendee's Company

    Notes:

After the Battle of Plattsburg, George turned his steps to the St.Lawrence River where rafting was being carried along to a great extent. He there hired to work, where French and Indians were his companions and neighbors, the latter being his most trusted friends. After having served in the capacity of raftsman until 1817 he returned to Pittsford, Vt. where his father still lived and paid him $100. This was the price of his time as a minor. After working a farm on shares for one year, in the Spring of 1819, he, with his young wife and brother-in-law, David Wadsworth, set out for the far west, Mt.Vernon, Ohio, where an elder sister, Azuba Hewett, of his wife had preceded them. George and David had each a horse so by putting them together, contituted a team. By hitching them to a lumber wagon they were able to bring all their worldly possessions with them. After journeying for weeks they finally arrived at South Dansville, New York where they were to make his sister, Mrs. Hendee, a visit and to rest for the remainder of their journey. After looking around for sometime and being earnestly persuaded by Mr. and Mrs. Hendee, they decided to remain in South Dansville, David Wadsworth in the meantime put his belongings in a knapsack and with a sad heart, mounted his horse and rode away to the western wilds of Ohio. George then took up a farm where Miner Bridge now resides(1905). After staying there a few years he moved to a farm just west of him, known as the Stevens Farm, where he lived until the Spring of 1831. During his stay in what is now called Rogersville, early in the Fall of 1831, there came a knock at the door. There were Milly's father, mother, widowed sister and two children on their way to Ohio where two brothers and two sisters were awaitng them. After about four or five weeks visiting with their daughter Milly and family they took their departure never more to meet. George, in the meantime continued clearing his land and building as he was prospering. "In the Fall of 1839 his true and noble wife was taken from him by the relentless hand of death." George now had a longing to visit the Old Home once more. So in the Fall of 1840, he, with his nephew, John Mark Hendee, started to Vermont. They were six weeks making the journey. In January the following year he married Racheal Henderson, a widow with two children. In the 1850 census of Dansville,Steuben Co.,NY, George is listed as a farmer and owner of real estate valued at $3,000. Also living with him according to the 1850 census: his wife, Rachel, sons, Paul, Leeds, George Jr., and step-daughter, Abbie Henderson. In his later life, as a Democrat, he was elected to many town offices. "George was a man of sterling integrity and being a man of few words and coming right to the point, he commanded the respect of all who knew him."

    Military Service:
As a member of the Rutland County Voluteers, George was on call for the Battle of Plattsburg, during the close of the War of 1812. As the story is told, on the 10th of September the men, including George, who had assembled in response to the call met in the village. After organizing, which occupied the forenoon, the company started for Burlington. Arriving at Vergennes the next day, they drew arms from the arsenal for those who were not supplied and continued to Charlotte, which they reached that night. The following morning they advanced to Burlington, crossed the lake to Plattsburg, but arrived too late to take part in the battle; they soon afterward returned to their homes.

    Notes:

In 1774, at the age of 10, David was a member of William Billings' Sacred Music School in Stoughton, David is listed under the heading,"Singers of Counter."(possibly todays equivalant of Alto). By 1786 he was a member of the Stoughton Musical Society.

  4. David was a charter member of the Rising Star Lodge F. & A.M Dec 1799 and present at the first meeting in Stoughton,Mass in January 1800 (also present was Paul Revere) where he was elected Senior Deacon. Today it is one of the oldest Masonic Lodges in Massachusetts.

  5. David moved to Vermont about 1810, from Stoughton,MA where he was a farmer, along with his brother, Elisha.

  6. 1810 census of Chittenden, Rutland Co., Vermont shows David with two males under 10, one female under 10, 2 females 10-15, and female 26-44.

Not clear if they made it to Fredericktown before the death of their son, David. Appears several family members died between 1830 and 1832.

  10. David was appointed Guardian of his son David's children. Court records in Knox County (Box 11, #273) receipts were submitted by David Sr. between 1834 and 1839Oct31 for purchases (shoe repairs, clothes, schooling, etc.) for Eliza and Timothy. In Oct1834 paid taxes on a schoolhouse he built in District No.1 on the property of his son, David Jr. Those expenses were approved 22Oct1840 by the court. No other guardian receipts noted. As guardian in 1837(20Feb) sold at auction property belonging to the heirs of his son, David Jr.
In June 1842, Timothy Burr and Absolom Thrift were appointed guardians of Timothy B. Wadsworth aged 16 (Eliza was over 18 at that point), which leads us to conclude that David Sr most likely died that year or before (most likely 1840).

  11. 1840 census, not found in Knox County, Ohio.

  12. David married Eleanor Capen on 15 May 1788 in Stoughton, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, USA. Robert came from what is know Lodi,Seneca County, New York in 1799 to the town of Hector where he had lived for five years. He settled on lot No.2.. "He drove his cattle from there on the Indian trail, and sent his up in a scow." He married Abigail Brown, whose sister, Sophia, married Robert's brother James. The following is taken from a Curry History written by James L. Curry, a grandson of James and Sophia Curry, in 1905. Abigail and Sophia were born in New Jersey and the daughters of William Brown, a scotchman, who it is stated was an officer in the Revolutionary War, belonging to Lee's Legion, and was killed in Battle. Abigail and Sophia's mother(madian Hulette?), was a full blooded French woman and sister(Andrew's note: "sister" not possibly, Dick Hunnewell was not French and was also born in the mid 1600's-to old to be a sister, also if she is a sister, woudnt her name be Hunnewell, not Hullette?) to the celebrated trapper, hunter, and Indian fighter, known as Dick Hunnewell. The Indians burned his house, killed his wife and two children, and took him prisoner and got everything ready to burn him at the stake. Inside the circle he seized the chief and hurled him into the fire and then in the confusion that followed, made his escape. From that time on, he hunted Indians, and marks on his rifle stock numbered twenty-seven that he had killed.

Robert married Abigail Brown about 1795.
