Moved to Windsor, CT in 1639. Findagrave shows 1,840 Loomis memorials, (2,560 LOOMIS memorials, 14 May, nearly a year later), 663 Lomax memorials, 274 memorials and 12 Lumis memorials, all can be traced to Joseph & Mary LOOMIS. f/o Nathaniel; Joseph; Sarah; Elizabeth; John; Thomas; Mary & Samuel.
Joseph's birthdate is actually unknown, but normally his wife's christening date is used as his birthdate. Also his deathdate is actually the date his will was read. The LOOMIS home is a National Landmark.
One of the most remarkable facts in the history of the house on "The Islands" is that the title has come down through generation after generation by inheritance, and has never been transferred by deed. It is believed to be the oldest homestead now standing in the United States. According to Edward C. Marshall's "Ancestors of General Grant," the Loomis home is the oldest in America, with the exception of the Van Rensselaer homestead at Albany, N.Y. The latter place was a few years older, but it is said that this house has been moved away from Albany, leaving the Loomis homestead alone in its distinction.

5607 One of the substantial citizens of Allen county died at his home five miles southeast of Humboldt Saturday morning, Jan. 30th. The deceased had been in usual health, but all unknown to those who loved him the dread disease was insidiously stealing away his life before them. An affection of the heart was the direct cause of Mr. Jewell's death. He was born in Alegheny county, New York, July 7, 1831. The deceased was only two years old when his parents removed to Michigan, where he was reared upon the home farm amid the wild scenes of frontier life. While quite young he began an apprenticeship as an engineer and was employed by large factories and saw mills until the time of the Civil war. He manifested his loyalty to his government by enlisting in Co. K, 12th Michigan Infantry, with which command he served 2 years and 11 months. He participated in the battle of Sabine Cross Roads and in many similar engagements, and when the war was ended received an honorable discharge.

In 1869 Mr. Jewell was united in marriage, in Michigan, to Saraph A. Whitford and moved to Allen county, Kansas, in 1870. He located in the southwest corner of Salem township, where he has since made his home. He leaves a wife, two sons and three daughters to mourn his loss. He was a good citizen, as his personal honor and integrity was never questioned, a kind husband and father and respected by all who knew him. But he had lived his three score years and ten, with two more years in which to add to the noble structure of his life. The funeral services took place at the residence of the deceased at 1 p. m. Monday and consisted of remarks by Dr. Karl Voegtle which were appropriate to the occasion and the deceased. The remains were then followed to Mt. Hope cemetery by many friends and there laid to rest.

5609 ONLY ASSUMED FATHER OF MOTTIE PECKHAM.

1900 census names him Mottie as Mottie Clinton, grandson of William and Catherine Peckham. He later goes by Mottie Charles Clinton. Ironically, there was a Charles Clinton that lived in the area of the Peckham's - this Charles appears to disappear after 1880 census.

Motties marriage record names parents: Charles Peckham and Nellie Peckham. Seeing how William and Catherine didn't have a child named Charles that I can find - however, did have a Nellie. I can assume that Nellie Peckham was indeed his mother and Charles was his fathers name, but not Peckham - but Clinton. DNA testing to the Weaver family (Charles Clinton's mother was Mary Caroline Weaver, daughter of Josiah Lockwood Weaver and Martha J Batterson. Josiah's mother was related to the Karr family -early settlers of Karr Valley in Almond, Allegany Co.,NY).

One other note: Nellie and her husband Lewis Breen are in Olean,NY in 1905 and 1910 - it appears Nellie may had died about that time as Lewis remarried in 1913. Ironically, Mottie and Ruth Davis have a daughter, Mildred born in Olean,NY - apparently they divorce and the Mildred is raised by the Parker family.

Bristol, N. Y. - A very shocking tragedy occurred in the western part of this town last Friday when Curtis Hitchcock, a well-to-do and respected farmer made an attempt at suicide but failed for the time being in his undertaking. His wife was about to make an afternoon call when Mr. Hitchcock persuaded her to remain at home for awhile. In a few minutes Mrs. Hitchcock and Geo. Briggs, a young nephew who lives there, heard three reports of a revolver which came from a room in the upper story of the house. They hurried to the scene above and found Mr. Hitchcock in a very critical condition slashing himself in and around the arms with a large jackknife. Mr. Briggs finally succeeded in getting him quieted, only after a hard struggle. Upon an examination they found that three bullets had entered his chest, besides the gashes in his arms. At the present writing he lies in a critical condition. The cause of this step is hardly understood. While many theories arise as to the cause of this act, it still remains a secret. Of late he has been afflicted with the grip which fact accounts for his state of despondency. His wife and daughter have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad affliction.

Bristol, N. Y. - George Haney, who was stricken with paralysis on Jan. 6, 1907, and had since been an invalid, died on Saturday night. He was born in Ohio 70 years ago. For many years he was a familiar figure through the nearby towns with a grocery on wheels and for the past four years had conducted the grocery and dry goods store formerly owned by Julius Shulters. He was a deacon of the Universalist Church and had been greatly missed since his illness had kept him away from it. He was a good man, honored by all. Many missed his thoughtful assistance and every one, young and old, knew if they had a favor to ask Mr. Haney would grant it if possible. He was a kind father and a loving grandfather, and was both to his two grandsons, Harold and Theodore Sleight, who remembered no other father. His funeral was held from the Universalist Church on Tuesday morning, Rev. L. D. Boynton officiating. He was buried at Allens Hill, beside his wife. He leaves three children, Mrs. George Wood of Victor; Mrs. William Codding and Mrs. Courtland Kent of this place; three grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Carr of Allen's Hill. The whole community has lost a friend and sympathize with the family in their loss.

5615 ONTARIO COUNTY JOURNAL December 30, 1904 PAGE 2 COL 4 Death of Mortimer Sleght. About midnight on Sunday, at his home on Scotland Road, occurred the death of Mortimer Sleght, a long time and respected resident. Mr. Sleght had been in failing health for several years, and since November had been confined to the home with a complication of heart and kidney troubles. Deceased was born here sixty-six years ago, and most of his life had been spent here. He was a Constable for over twenty years, and was turnkey under Sheriff Robert H. Wheeler. In 1870 he married Harriet L. Scott, of Rochester, who with three sons, Walter S., Francis J., and Carlton M. Sleght, all prominent in the business life of the village survive. One brother, Carlton W. Sleght, of Allen's Hill, also survives. Mr. Sleght wasa a member of Company K, N Y Mounted Rifles, which did valiant service in the Civil War. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Lewis Sweet of the Presbyterian church conducting the service. His body was interred 1904 Canandaigua, New York, Woodlawn Cemetery. Section 7 52.

In the 1892 Canandaigua Census he is listed as 54 years of age, a Constable. 1900 Canandaigua Census shows them married 29 years. At the Ontario County Archives in Hopewell, NY, I found a copy of their marriage recorded in 1904 amongst the miscellaneous records. It read as follows, This certifies that on the twenty first day of September, in the year of our Lord 1870,A. Mortimer Sleght and H. Louise Scott were by me united in marriage at East Bloomfield, according to the laws of the State of NY. L. D. Chapin, Minister. Witnesses were H. C. Gilbert and Chas. McKinney. A true copy of the original recorded 30th December 1904. (Harriet Louise Scott is #4263.)

Some humor has come to light concerning the changing of the spelling of the surname. According to a descendant of Mortimer, he sent a letter to his wife Louise explaining that they would change the spelling from Sleight to Sleght because the military had recorded his name as Sleght. Changing their name to Sleght was the only way to collect his pay and pension. The descendant related to me that there was a family joke that he lost an i, a verbal pun for eye, in the Civil War.

5641 Our ancestor Michel Bouchard is the son of Clement Bouchard and Louise
Bressard-Brillard was baptized on November 16 1635, in the church of
St-Nazaire, of the parish of Andilly-the-Marsh,at LaRochelle, France.
In March 1657, Michel Bouchard, 21 years of age agrees to leave his
native area of Saintonge, to go to remain in New-France (Quebec) for
three years.
He arrives at Quebec at 4 hours of the morning on August 20, 1657. On
January 25 1660, Charles Legardeur offers to Michel, for five years, a
plot of land called the Michaelmas, close to the seigniory of Sillery.
Michel does not finish this first lease. On December 13 1661, he
accepts another three years lease with Nicolas Huot dit St. Laruent.
October 25 1662, Michel buys a site of one arpent (acre) and half
of land facing the coast of Beauport. Following 21 November, he meets
with the Audouart notary, in order to conclude his treaty to his
marriage with Marie Trotin, born about 1645, daughter of Jean Trotin.
The marriage is celebrated on December 2, in the church of Visitation
of Our-Lady in Chateau-Richer, Que.
It is on March 13 1664, which Michel Bouchard receives his first
concession on behalf of Charles Aubert of Chesnaye, seigneur of the
coast of Bowsprit and the Ile of Orleans.
The census of 1667 indicates that Michel Bouchard lives in
Sainte-Anne of the Petite Cap, on the side of the Cape Tourmente, the
future parish of Saint-Joachim. Michel is then 28 years old and Marie
is 22. Two arpents (acres)of its dwelling are in culture. Then in
1673,Michel decides to become a farmer again, in the seigniory of
Beauport, close to the village de Fargy.
From the seven or eight children of Marie Trotin and Michel, three
have a link in this genealogy. The first, Marie-Madeleine, born on
March 31 1665 marries in Riviere Ouelle, towards 1679, the ancestor
Pierre Dancause (Dancosse), born towards 1645, originating near the
Small Rock, in Aunis. Pierre Dancause (Dancosse) has an indirect
connection to my Michaud ancestry, Charles who married Madeleine Dube
on April 5, 1690, is a link to my Dube ancestory, and Gabriel my
direct Bouchard ancestor, was born on Nov.8, 1675, married in Riviere
Ouelle on Jan. 12, 1701, to M. Francoise Lizotte.
In 1681, the census taker notes that the family has seven
children, it surely has forgotten one of them. The following year,
Marie Trottin dies, one does not know on the precise date. Marie
Trottin dies before October 27 1682 because, on that date Michel
Bouchard marries the widow of Martin Fouquet, Marie-Madeleine de
LaPorte.
In October 1690, the ancestor Michel Bouchard takes share, with
his sons Etienne, Francois, Pierre and his son-in-law Pierre Dancause,
for the defense of the River-Ouelle at the time of the attack of the
fleet of Phipps. In all, forty inhabitants succeed in surprising the
soldiers and forcing a retreat of the army.
Towards 1692, Michel Bouchard leaves the River-Ouelle and settles
in Quebec to open a cabaret (a tavern) there.
At 80 years age, Michel dies on April 14, 1709 and is buried in
the cemetery of the hospital, Hotel-Dieu of Quebec.

5642 Our beautiful and precious Velinda Lander, 41, died on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004.

Velinda was born Aug. 6, 1963, in Fort Sill, Okla., to Nancy Lander Guenther and Larry Guenther.

She is survived by her parents; her son, Andrew Fugier; and many friends who loved her very much.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her sister, Naomi.

Velinda worked as an interior designer for The Lemon Tree and taught water aerobics at the YMCA. Known for her generosity and opening up her home to others, she always gave sacrificially to help others beautify their homes and lives, even in times of personal stress and exhaustion as her health was failing.

A member of the O.A.S.I.S. singles group, she is remembered for her elaborate and delicious soup kitchens, organizing and designing entries for local charities and helping her many friends design their homes.

Velinda was a strong supporter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and she generously donated her design talents to the Lincoln art shows held in conjunction with the annual conference on mental illness.

Her extraordinarily creative show designs beautifully highlighted the art talents of those suffering from serious mental illness.

Velinda's quiet and gentle way of creating loveliness out of the simplest of materials enriched the lives of many.

Her hobbies included cooking, creating recipe books, quilting, sewing, book club, art and creative writing. Our own "Emily Post," she always displayed and coached others in graciousness, etiquette and decorum.

Graveside services have taken place. There will be a funeral Mass at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, followed by an informal memorial gathering at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, 1502 Shirley Road, Helena, MT.
