5871 Quite a commotion was caused at Bruce and Eleanors wedding reception, at the home of Eleanor's parents. Alice Moose Oaks stated in the Moose genealogy, "When seated at the table, a horn tooted outside as a signal to the bride and groom. They were up an dashing out the door as we sat in stunned silence. In short order the best man and maid of honor were out and after them - but to no avail. Dr. Buck drove the bridal pair to where their car had been secreted with their luggage in the Geneva area. Fortunately the bride's mother knew what was going to happen. Having played some devilish tricks on others at times, they were being very cautious about any tricks that had been hatched up for them." Eleanor graduated Dansville High School as well as Alfred State College and Geneseo Normal School. She was a teacher having taught the Webster District, "Knowledge is Power" Robert's District, Sparta Center, Dansville, Scottsburg, Kysorville, and retired from the Wayland Central School in 1972. Many one room schools closed one after the other as the districts were consolidated. She was the last of the one-room school teachers in Livingston County when the Kysorville School was closed in 1964. In 1984 she was enjoying her retirement with her grandchildren. One winter went to Florida "and wouldn't you know it - it snowed in Florida that winter!" Eleanor and Bruce had a cottage at Loon Lake in Steuben County. She was a member of the Dansville Presbyterian Church, the Kate J. Jackson Chapter of the Court of Amaranth and the Deborah Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star both in Dansville. She was also a former member of the Scottsburg Grange.

5879 Ralph Allen, the son of George Allen and his first wife, is believed
to have been born in about 1615 in England. Although it has not been
determined when he arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, it is
known that he did not travel on the same ship as his father, George.
According to available records, Ralph was generally referred to as a
planter and wheelwright. This was apparently to distinguish him from
the other Ralph Allen residing at Sandwich who was married to a woman
named Esther Swift and was a mason by trade. Although Ralph is
thought to have married sometime around 1630-1635, it is not known at
this time whether he married in England, or after he arrived in the
Massachusetts Bay Colony. Our Ralph is believed to have been married
to a woman named Susannah.
Ralph eventually settled at Sandwich in the New Plymouth Colony of
Massachusetts where his father lived. In 1657, while residing at
Sandwich, Quakerism began spreading throughout the Colony, and Ralph
and six of his brothers and sisters were apparently among the first to
be "convinced." Unfortunately, the adoption of Quakerism by the

5880 Ralph Hartman's Sad Death
Ran Over by Cars and Both Legs Cut Off
Mr. and Mrs. Orville T. Hartman of Poplar Bluff, Mo., former residents of Dansville, have just passed through a bereavement that but few parents are called upon to undergo, their oldest son Ralph Hartman, about eighteen years old, having been run over by the cars and his death followed. The young man had gone to St. Louis on Tuesday of last week to purchase clothing for himself and while there he was robbed and not having money to pay his railroad fare he started to walk home, taking the railroad track as the nearest route. After traversing some twelve miles he sat down at the side of the track to rest and must have fallen asleep, for he was awakened by being run over by a train and both legs were cut off below the knees. He was picked up and taken back to St. Louis where both legs were amputated, one just below the knee and the other nearly at the body. Mr. Hartman reached him early Wednesday morning and although the boy was able to give a clear statement of the accident he was very weak from the loss of blood and he died at nine o'clock that night. It was decided to bury the young man on the family lot in this village and Mrs. Hartman left Thursday night with the body, reaching here very early Saturday morning, and a short service was held from St. Peter's church in the afternoon, Rev. S. H. Ailing the rector officiating. The affair is a very sad one indeed, and the parents and the sister and brother remaining have the sympathy of this community where they are so well known and so highly esteemed. The son was born and reared here and when he left with his parents for the home at Poplar Bluff, to which place they moved four or five years ago, he left many young acquaintances and companions who are shocked at his untimely death.
