    Notes
    • Michael is a graduate of Hornell High School, Hornell, NY, Class of 1966. He worked with his father, Dorr, in a small family run garage in Hornell, NY for many years. He currently is employed at New York State Electric and Gas, Inc., in the UC&M department. He has been there 20 years. Michael built many race cars while working with his dad, running at many New York State dirt racetracks. He has been involved with NASCAR auto racing, as a part-time official, working 10-12 race a year with Timing and Scoring until his retirement in 2004.

    • Concord, NC/Arkport- - The family of Michael D. Burdett wish to announce the passing of their beloved husband and father on Thursday (Feb. 3, 2022) in their North Carolina home after a 10-month battle against glioblastoma.
Born October 21,1948 to Dorr and Shirley (Glover) Burdett, Michael enjoyed many years of his youth at the Burdett family farm on Big Creek. During this time, he learned from his father and his friends how to repair and build automobiles and went on to work with Dorr in the family business, Burwood Auto Service, outside of Hornell.
It was in this garage with his friends and father that Mike began building race cars to run at Woodhull Raceway and other tracks in New York and Pennsylvania. To know Mike was to spend time with him in his garage or at a racetrack or guessing what type of vehicle he'd be driving from one day to the next. His passion for racing never died, and neither did his meticulous care of his own vehicles and tools.
Michael was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1966. On July 12, 1969, in the former Park Church in Hornell, he married Linda Wellington, his high school sweetheart, and they enjoyed 52 years together. Mike became a jack-of-all-trades because Linda always had a project. He hated carpentry, but he was quite good at it. They lived in the Bishopville/Arkport area before shocking everyone and moving to North Carolina in 2014. The pull of children and grandchildren is a powerful thing.
Mike had great pride in his son Jason's NASCAR career and daughter Jamie's success in higher education. His grandson Ethan, following the paths of the Burdett men before him, gave Mike the chance to get back in the racing game. He spent many hours working on E's Quarter Midgets and Outlaw carts and loved watching Ethan's success, including his first trip to the Tulsa Shootout in Oklahoma this December. Mike never missed a chance to support his girls Emmalynn, Emmerson and Josie at gymnastics and dance competitions, piano recitals, basketball and t-ball games - going so far as to turn the race car hauler into a dressing room at one dance recital!
Mike is predeceased by his parents, Dorr and Shirley Burdett; along with many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Jason (Rachael) Burdett and daughter, Jamie (Silas) Stamey; grandchildren, Ethan and Emmerson Burdett and Emmalynn and Josie Stamey; his sister, Michelle Burdett; special aunt, Nancy Glover, and many close friends and relatives.
Michael retired from NYSEG/UC&M department in Hornell.
Calling hours are 4-6 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2022) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell, where a brief funeral service will take place in his memory following the calling hours at 6 p.m. A "Celebration of Life" and a time of remembrance will immediately follow (beginning at 6:30 p.m.) at The Main Place, 251 Main St., Hornell.
