    Notes
    • Mrs. Roswell Shepherd, whose death occurred at the home of Cyrus Roberts, Esq., in Watkins, N, Y., Sunday, Dec. 28th, 1890, following a stroke of paralysis on Dec. 23d, was one of the best known and most highly regarded residents in this locality. Her maiden name was Maria Leek. She was the daughter of Daniel Leek, and was born at Peach Orchard Point, March 15th, 1814. When she was thirteen years of age, her widowed mother became the wife of Judge John Dow, the first settler on the site of Watkins, and also of the town of Reading. Her home from that time until her marriage was near Reading Centre. October 19th, 1833, she became the wife of Roswell Shepherd, residing subsequently in Altay, and in 1853 taking up their home in Reading Centre, where on July 20th, 1888, Mr. Shepherd passed away. Since that time Mrs. Shepherd has resided for a considerable portion of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Roberts. Of her four children, but one, Louisa, had preceded her to the beyond. Those living are Lev Shepherd of Reading Centre; Frances, wife of Cyrus Roberts of Watkins, and Charlotte, wife of Amasa H. Nichols of Brooklyn. Seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren complete the list of her descendants. The deceased was a woman of most exemplary character. Her life was characterized by kindly deeds. Her memory will long be cherished by those so fortunate as to claim her acquaintance, and come within the influence of her loving nature. She was a woman of exceptionally strong mind who by much reading kept abreast with the literature of the times. To her children and grandchildren a loving minister, patient and tireless, a real " Mother" in every sense of the word, and with a face sweet and strong, made placid by the experience of a lifetime.

"Homeward serenely she walked with God's benediction upon her; When she had passed it seemed like the ceasing of exquisite music."

The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Reading Centre, on December 30th, Revs. Mr. Bogart and P.J. Bull officiating. Preliminary services by Rev. B. K. Douglas were conducted at the house of Mr. Roberta. The burial was in the family lot at Reading Centre.
