- Lester A. Mitchell, 84, of Lanning Rd., passed away unexpectedly Sunday (Aug. 26, 2001) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. Lester was born Dec. 14, 1916 in Springwater, a son of Delbert and Dora (Richards) Mitchell. Lester was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army from 1941-1945, where he received a Bronze Star. He married Gladys Hosmer on Nov. 11, 1952 in Naples, she survives. Lester was a potato farmer for many years. He retired from the Gunlocke Chair Company, Wayland in 1981. Lester was a very active member of the N. Cohocton/Atlanta United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially bowling. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gladys; one son, David (Robin) Mitchell of Naples; two grandchildren, Christopher (Katie) Mitchell of Palmyra and Jacqueline Mitchell of Vermont; one sister, Mary Kimbel of Springwater; two brothers, Fred (Vera) Mitchell of Canisteo and Paul (Marjorie) Mitchell of Lisbon, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 100 E, Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Scott Green and Rev. Verne Shattner officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Clearview Cemetery, N. Cohocton. Contributions may be made to the N. Cohocton/Atlanta United Methodist Church or the Naples Ambulance Corps. in memory of Lester A. Mitchell.
