- Viola T. Culbertson, 86, died Saturday (May 18, 2002) at the
Livingston County Skilled Nursing Facility in Geneseo, where she had
resided with her husband, Charles, who survives.
Born Aug. 13, 1915 in Canaseraga, she was a daughter of Luke Irwin and
Irena Thompson. She was a graduate of Dalton Central School, and a
graduate of the Dansville Red Cross as a licensed practical nurse. She
married Charles Culbertson on March 17, 1940, in Dansville.
She was in the nursing profession for many years in Dansville
Hospital, where she retired. She belonged to many organizations:
Dansville Grange, Livingston County Pomona Grange, Kate J. Jackson
Court of Amaranth, where she served in many capacities, Deborah Order
of Eastern Star, Dansville Presbyterian Church, serving on numerous
committees until her health prevailed her in March. She enjoyed
crocheting and knitting. She especially enjoyed doing for others.
She was predeceased by her parents; two brothers, James William
Thompson and Harold Lockwood; a granddaughter, Barbara Joan
Culbertson.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Robert (Abbi)
of Florida and Harold (Judy) of Dansville; two daughters, Irene
(Richard) Shutt of Dansville and Margaret (Leonard) Burgoine of
Wayland; two sisters, Ada Rumsey of Bath and Lois Munger of Florida; a
brother, Edward (Arlene) Lockwood of Geneseo; two sisters-in-law,
Marion Thompson of Alden and Alvira Lockwood of Castile; 15
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and
nephews.
Calling hours will be at the Chamberlain-Baird Funeral Home in
Dansville on Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., with the Amaranth
Foundation service at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the
Dansville Presbyterian Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be at
the Greenmount Cemetery in Dansville.
Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation of the
Kate J. Jackson Order of Amaranth in memory of Voila Culbertson.
