Army of the Hudson - Dec 1780Pension Record - Nicholson, Francis (American Revolution)
Provided by Perry Streeter ( www.perry.streeter.com )Died 09 Dec 1803 Salem, Wayne Co., Pennsylvania, USA Notes - Francis served in the American Revolution from January 1776 apparently
until 31Dec1780, having attained the rank of Sergeant. He first
enlisted in Capt. Hale's Company as a Private, in the State Regt. at
Boston under Col. Eratus Wolcott from Jan. to March 1776. Francis
joined Lt David Smith Co. at Peekskill,NY on 13 Apr 1777 and there
served under the command of Gen. Eratus Wolcott as part of the 1st
Connectcut Brigade and served until the 19th of May 1777. His time
between his enlistments from 1776 to 1778 is not completely documented
in Connecticut records. It is stated that he joined Smith's Company
at Peekskill, therefore he must have been there prior, although the
last record of his enlisted ended March 1776. Secondly, after May
1777 there is no record of Francis in service until he is in the rolls
as a Sergeant in Capt Wrights Co. in Col Enos' Regiment, on the
Hudson, stationed at West Point. From there, Sgt. Franics Nicholson
enlists in Capt Walker's Company on 21 July 1778 under the command of
Col Samuel B. Webb. During the summer of 1778, Webb's Regiment is
attached to Varnum's Brigade and marched to Rhode Island, engaging in
the battle there of 29 Aug 1778, known as the Battle of Rhode Island,
at Newport. Webb's Regt. was "commended for its conduct," in the
battle. They remained in Rhode Island until the fall of the
following year, when they were sent to the winter quarters in
Morristown,NJ and assigned to Stark's Brigade. They were present at
the Battle of Springfield,NJ, which took place in June of 1780 and
assigned by Gen Greene, to reinforce Lee's Dragoons, during the
battle. A few months later the Regiment, with Sgt Nicholson, returned
to New York and served with the main army on the Hudson until 31
December 1780 when it was reorganized for the next formation. Col.
Samuel B. Webb's Regt. was transferred to the Connecticut Line and
designated the 3rd Connecticut. Sgt Nicholson was with this Regiment
until the close of the war as stated in his application for invalid
pension, dated 1792. According to this document he first became
disabled in 1781, suffering from "weakness and debility, occasioned by
smallpox, and excessive fatigue and hardships." Although he
apparently continued his service in the 3rd Connecticut as noted in
his widows pension record dated 1837, his oldest son Edmund, recalls
"...that he has ever since his recollection heard his parents relate
the fact that when an infant his father being home on a furlough, took
his mother the said Rachel Nicholson to see the French Army then
encamped at Hartford..." (Edmund was born February 1782).
Papers pertaining to Francis' Revolutionary War service record
were featured on the PBS television series, Ancestors, in 1997.
Also on PBS, in the television series, The Woodwright's Shop, the
woodworking tools of Francis Nicholson of Glastonbury, Connecticut
were featured; he was characterized as a master plane-maker.
Unfortunately, the compiler(Perry Streeter) has had little cooperation
to date from PBS in learning more about the ultimate sources of this
information.
