- CANISTEO - Donald B. "Don" Wallace, 87, of #1 Jackson St., Canisteo,
entered into rest at his home on Saturday (May 19, 2001).
He was born in the town of West Union on November 18, 1913, the son of
Lee and Grace (Bettinger) Wallace. On August 17, 1935 in Wellsville,
he married Gladys M. Granger, who survives.
Don had lived in Canisteo the greater part of his life, where he has
been a dedicated and active member of the Canisteo Fire Department for
over 60 years. He had served as President of the Canisteo Fire Co.,
and as a Captain and Assistant Chief of the Fire Dept. A devoted and
active member of the Dept.'s Ambulance Service, Don received the
Canisteo Fireman of the Year Award in 1989. Don also had served as
Town Constable for several years.
In his early years, Don worked as a boiler maker's helper at the
former Erie Railroad Shops in Hornell. He later was employed by the
Steuben County Highway Dept., and retired as a machinist from the
Ingersonll-Rand Co. in Painted Post in 1972 with 22 years of service.
Don's family includes his wife of 65 years, Gladys M. Wallace; two
daughters, Patricia (Ira) Stiles of Lindley and Beverly (Robert)
Mullen of Canisteo; two sons, Thomas (Barbara) Wallace of York, Pa.
and Michael (Carolyn) Wallace of Canisteo; his step-brother, Robert
"Red" (Jackie) Wallace of Rochester; 15 grandchildren and several
great-grand and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, James Wallace; a step-sister,
Joyce Greene and a granddaughter, Patty Stiles.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at
the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, where there will
be a Fireman's Memorial Service at 9 p.m. Monday. Funeral and
committal services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m.
Tuesday, and burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
