ERNEST R. BARDWELL
Former Angelica Resident Dies
After Serious Operation at Hospital
ANGELICA Sept. 11 - Death claimed a former resident Friday evening
when Ernest R. Bardwell, 65 years old died at the Bethesda Hospital in
Hornell. He had undergone a serious operation the previous Saturday,
which although successful, did not succeed in removing the cause of
his critical illness. His passing came as a welcome release from
intense suffering. Funeral services will be conducted at his late home
at Grove on the Bardwell homestead farm, Sunday at 2:30 P.M. Rev.
I.H. Crocker of Niagara Falls, former pastor of the Methodist church
here, and a close friend of the family, will officiate. Interment will
be in the family plot in "Until the Day Dawn" cemetery here. Rev. L.A.
Davis will assist with the committal service. The
deceased was born at Whitney Crossing, Jan. 14, 1861, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Sullivan F. Bardwell. He was graduated from the Canaseraga
schools and from the Indiana Business Institute, Valparaiso, Indiana.
On Sept. 6, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Sophie M. Bingham
at Farmersville Center, Cattaraugus County. To them were born three
children, Eugene S., R Raymond, and Myrtle F. Of these, the former,
now pastor of the Methodist church at Morrisville, and the latter, a
student in Fredonia Normal school survive, Raymond having died here in
1912. Mrs. Bardwell passed away in February 1920, during the terrible
influenza epidemic.
Mr. Bardwell and his family made their home in Angelica for several
years, having moved here in 1903. Since the passing of his wife, Mr.
Bardwell had made his home with his mother and sister in Grove. At
the time of his illness about a month ago, he was working in
Philadelphia. Most of his adult life was spent at his trade,
carpentry, although for 13 years he served as rural mail carrier on
Route 2 out of Angelica Post Office.
Uniting with the Methodist church when a young man, Mr. Bardwell had
always been a loyal and active worker in his fellowship. With Mrs.
Bardwell, he joined the local church by letter when the family came
here more than 20 years ago, and he served on the official board as
long as he remained in the village.
In addition to the children mentioned above deceased leaves to mourn
his passing one sister, Miss Ada C. Bardwell, of Grove, and two
brothers, John S. Bardwell of Grove, and Howard E. Bardwell of
Muskegon, Mich., one grandchild, Aileen Janet Bardwell, of
Morrisville, and several nieces, cousins in this and other states.
Many have been the expressions of sympathy from his wide circle of
friends during his illness, and his translation will be sincerely
regretted
by scores who knew and admired him. Ernest Bardwell loved his home,
his church and his country and was loyal to them all.
The floral tributes and other expressions of sympathy at the time of
Mr. Bardwell's illness, and at his funeral reflected the high esteem
in which he was held. Among those from a distance who came for the
last rites were: Mr. and Mrs. James R. Green and Roy H. Hills of
Buffalo, G. Claire Burch of Kushequa, Pa., Prof. and Mrs. C.D. Hill of
Dansville, and others from Hornell, Arkport, Shinglehouse, Pa., and
other places. Cause of Death: Pancreatic Cancer
