    Notes
    • LEONARD, CATHERINE—Mrs. Catherine Leonard died at the home of her son, George E. Leonard in Chelsea township, at 1 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 1918, aged 87 years 2 months and 6 days.

Catherine King was born February 3, 1831. She was married to Abraham Leonard at Havana, N.Y., December 21, 1848. To this union seven children were born: Theodore S., who is a regularly ordained and active minister of the Baptist church at Waterford, N.Y.; Harriet E. Warner of Geneva, Neb., mother of Dr. L.H. Warner and C.J. Warner; Emma L. Mosher of Billings Mont.; Catherine Luella, who died at Puyallup, Wash., September 8, 1894; George E. of Geneva, Neb.; and Maggie Eugena, who died April 2, 1877, aged six years. Only two of the children were permitted to be present at the funeral. Mrs. Warner and George E., the rest living at such a distance that it was impossible for them to be present.

The deceased was born twice: her first and natural birth occurred February 3, 1831, and the second and spiritual birth occurred a few years later when at a tender age, she gave her heart to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and accepted him as her person Savior. She then united with the Baptist church and remained a faithful and devoted member of the same until God caller her to become a member of the church triumphant, which is before the great white throne. During her pilgrimage here she had experienced much of the lights and shadows, joys and sorrows, defeats and victories which are a common heritage of humanity. Pioneering in Pennsylvania when the Civil War broke out, her husband tore himself away from her and their dear children to go out in defense of the union, and she was left in charge of the home and children and was faithful to the trust, but the way was long, and her feet grew weary, and her eyes grew dim, and her form was bending from the toils of the way, and she grew homesick for the "Homeland" , and at last a celestial door swung noiselessly and a voice of great tenderness and matchless love said "Child , come home."

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard came to Nebraska in the spring of 1871 and homesteaded in Saline county near the town of Pleasant Hill, then the county seat. Twenty-six years ago they moved to Fillmore county. Mr. Leonard died in 1911.

The funeral was conducted from the George Leonard home in Chelsea township at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, by Rev. R.H. Thompson. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
