- FALL RIVER -- Ignace A. "Iggy" Zawalski, 87, of Westport, died
Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the
husband of Dorothy E. (Besse) Kuliga Zawalski.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary
(Jazowska) Zawalski. He lived in New Bedford for most of his life,
moving to Westport four years ago.
He was a communicant of Holy Name Church.
He formerly was employed as a loom fixer for the Berkshire-Hathaway
Mill for more than 30 years and later worked as a custodian for the
New Bedford School Department until retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Polish National Club of Chicago and former
member of the New Bedford Gridiron Club, the Retired State, County and
Municipal Employees Association and the American Association of
Retired Persons.
During World War II, he served in the Navy on the USS Upshur.
Besides his wife, survivors include three sons, Mitchell J. Kuliga of
Assonet, Robert H. Kuliga of New Bedford and Paul F. Kuliga of Gorham,
NH; a daughter, Dorothy M. (Zawalski) Baptista of Westport; two
sisters, Helen Bettencourt of New Bedford and Jennie Costa of Calif.;
seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews.
He was the brother of the late Walter F. Zawalski and grandfather of
the late Daniel and Susan Kuliga.
A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Holy Name Church,
New Bedford. Arrangements are by the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals,
495 Park St., New Bedford.
