- Frederick H. "Jack" Lander 83, passed away on September 6, 2013 at a local nursing home in Moss Point. He was born to Percy Wilford Lander and Lela Mae Byrd Lander in Kreole, MS on March 2, 1930. Named Frederick for his paternal grandfather, he was nicknamed "Jack Dempsey" by his maternal grandfather because of his large baby fists, shortened to "Jack".
Jack graduated from Moss Point High School in 1949 where he was active in band and Chorus. He received his Bachelors degree in Music Education from Mississippi Southern and a Masters in Music Ed at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. Jack served as band director at Stewart M. Jones Junior High School in Laurel, MS, started the band at Bay Springs, MS and taught in Houston, MS. After returning home to Moss Point he directed school bands at St. Martin and then at Moss Point and retired in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, Frederick H. "Fritz" and Hannah Elizabeth Jones Lander, and Elijah C. "Lige" and Mary Louise Havens Byrd, his older brother, Rev. P.W. Lander Jr. and Rachel Lander, and sister-in-law Shirley Wilson Lander.
He is survived by his wife Mary Day McArthur Lander of Moss Point, John Frederick Lander from Moss Point, David Malcolm and Audrey Cibula Lander from Picayune, MS, Rebecca Susan and Jerry Gorski from Yulee, FL, Lisa Ellen and Steve Pittman from Pascagoula, MS. Grandchildren: Jason M. and Nichole Krebs from Salt Lake City, UT, Margie and Jeff Young from Ocean Springs, step granddaughter Jodie Gorski McKenzie and "Chuck", Amanda Lander McFadden and Robert, Emily Lander, Matthew Lander, Lauren Lander and Anna Lander, Rebecca "Becca" and Robert Frederick Pittman. Great-grandchildren: Jackson Krebs Young, Robert "Bo" McFadden, Elias A. "Eli" McFadden, William Frederick McFadden, Mary Isabella "Bella" McFadden, and one week old Hannah Elizabeth McFadden, Averie Kate and Parker McKinzie. Brothers and sisters: Floyd E. Lander Sr. and Rose Greenough Lander, Clarice Lander Milburg, Jesse V. and Diane Lander, Arthur and Jane Lander, Gerald C. Lander, Linda Lee Lander, Mary Elizabeth and Jack Foster, and Joe Will Lander and Betty Burnsed. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Two aunts, Eunice "Blackie" Lander Baker and Martha Cecile "Ceil" Baggett.
The Landers had their 60th wedding anniversary on July 24, 2013. Jack was a member of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Pascagoula, MS, where he directed the choir for many years. He was a member of Clan McArthur Society for many years, a founding member of CAA USA (Clan Arthur Association of USA) having been a tent host at many Highland games and an official piper for the society. He piped at the Ceilidh after the inauguration of James Edward Moor McArthur as Chief of Clan Arthur in Edinburgh. He and Day are members of Gesellschaft Mobile/Worms and attended an anniversary celebration of the twin city relationship between the two cities in Germany.
Jack was a member of the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus and was on the traveling degree initiation team. He was a duke in a K of C Ball and also in an Elks ball. He was a member of the tenor section of Singing River Chorale as long he could stand and sing.
In October 2003, he was a victim of West Nile Ecephalitis, which led to Lewy Body dementia, which became more and more serious until he had to enter Singing River Rehab and Nursing Home, where he passed away one month before the tenth anniversary of the WNE.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Rosary will be recited at 7:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church beginning at 10:00am with Father Tony Arguellas officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held in Griffin Cemetery in Moss Point, with grandsons and nephews serving as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Clan Arthur Association of USA, Robert W. Arthur, 613 W. Edwards St. Princeton, N.C. 27569, St. Vincent de Paul of Our Lady of Victories Parish, or the Historical and Genealogy Society of Jackson County.
Heritage Funeral Home in Escatawpa, MS is in charge of arrangements.
