- OSSIAN - Beatrice C. Shay, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday (Jan. 9,
2005) at the Livingston County Skilled Nursing Facility in Geneseo.
Beatrice was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Conesus, a daughter of Lester and
Jesse (Johnston) Kidd. She was a 1930 graduate of the Alfred Rural
Training Class, and she attended Geneseo State College from 1930 to
1932, after which she taught at the one-room school in Ossian. She
married Clarence Shay on July 15, 1933, in East Aurora; he predeceased
her on March 8, 1991. She was also predeceased by her son, Roger Shay,
in 1987.
Beatrice was the Town of Ossian tax collector for a number of years,
as well as the chairwoman of the Election Board for Ossian, the vice
president of the Loyal Hearts of Kings Daughters, president of the
Livingston County Home Extension, president of the Ossian Presbyterian
Church's Ladies Aide, a member of the Session of the Ossian
Presbyterian Church, the historian for the Town of Ossian, a Matron of
the Ossian Juvenile Grange in 1940, a lecturer of the Ossian Grange
and a Livingston County 4-H leader for several years. She was a member
of the Ossian Presbyterian Church, and also attended the Canaseraga
Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie DeBerardinis of Rush and
Linda (Shay) Scavone and Anthony Scavone of Saratoga Springs; seven
grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Friends may call 10 a.m. - noon Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the
Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St., Dansville, where funeral
services will be held at the conclusion of calling, with Rev. Steve
Behnke officiating. Burial will be in Ossian Hill Cemetery.
