- Ralph Hartman's Sad Death
Ran Over by Cars and Both Legs Cut Off
Mr. and Mrs. Orville T. Hartman of Poplar Bluff, Mo., former residents of Dansville, have just passed through a bereavement that but few parents are called upon to undergo, their oldest son Ralph Hartman, about eighteen years old, having been run over by the cars and his death followed. The young man had gone to St. Louis on Tuesday of last week to purchase clothing for himself and while there he was robbed and not having money to pay his railroad fare he started to walk home, taking the railroad track as the nearest route. After traversing some twelve miles he sat down at the side of the track to rest and must have fallen asleep, for he was awakened by being run over by a train and both legs were cut off below the knees. He was picked up and taken back to St. Louis where both legs were amputated, one just below the knee and the other nearly at the body. Mr. Hartman reached him early Wednesday morning and although the boy was able to give a clear statement of the accident he was very weak from the loss of blood and he died at nine o'clock that night. It was decided to bury the young man on the family lot in this village and Mrs. Hartman left Thursday night with the body, reaching here very early Saturday morning, and a short service was held from St. Peter's church in the afternoon, Rev. S. H. Ailing the rector officiating. The affair is a very sad one indeed, and the parents and the sister and brother remaining have the sympathy of this community where they are so well known and so highly esteemed. The son was born and reared here and when he left with his parents for the home at Poplar Bluff, to which place they moved four or five years ago, he left many young acquaintances and companions who are shocked at his untimely death.
