    • MISS MART B. HARTMAN Miss Mary B. Hartman, 93, one of the oldest residents of North Dansville township and one of the few surviving charter members of Clara Barton Chapter No. 1, American Red Cross, died at her home on North Main street, Monday afternoon, November 1, 1948. Miss Hartman, daughter of the late George Hartman and Caroline Hamsher Hartman, was born September 11, 1855 in the house which is now the Reed Nursing Home. She had the distinction of having resided in but two houses during her entire lifetime, the home in which she was born and the home where she resided at the time of her death. Born of sturdy pioneer parents, Miss Hartman inherited their qualities of energy, initiative, and foresight. She had enjoyed good health until about a week ago when she sustained injuries in a fall which confined her to her bed and resulted in her death.
During her girlhood, Miss Hartman attended select schools in this village. She was a life-long member of St. Paul's United Lutheran Church, served as organist of the Church for some years and was a charter member of the Loyal Hearts Circle of King's Daughters and a former president of the organization. Following fifty years of service with the group several years ago, she was presented with a cross and chain as a token of appreciation for her years of faithful service. A charter member of Clara Barton Chapter No. 1, American Red Cross, Miss Hartman was thoroughly familiar with the work of the organization since it was formed and followed with interest its activities down through the years. Prior to the organizing of the Chapter she often attended lectures given by Miss Barton and she vividly recalled talking with the Chapter's founder, and often related interesting Information regarding Miss Barton to friends and acquaintances. On September 11 of this year Miss Hartman was given a surprise birthday anniversary party and on this occasion she and her friends enjoyed in reminiscing. Those who gathered at her home remarked on her alertness, keen mind and ability to vividly recall events of many years past. Miss Hartman is survived by six cousins, Mrs. Emma Hartman Noyes, Mrs. Sophie LaRouette and Glenn Hamsher, all of Dansville, Mrs. Blanche Hartman of New York City, Mrs. Maud Gibson of Buffalo and Herbert Hamsher of East Rochester.
