  Notes	He was living with his uncle Hugh Hartman in Dansville in 1850 and 1855 as a tanner and currier. John apparently removed to Oregon before 1860. According to his obituary as published in the Dansville Express, 1904; Geo. E. Fish of Maple Ridge, Michigan sent a letter to the Dansville Express stating, "I received a letter from McMinnville, Oregon, announcing the death of John J. Hartman on the 23d of April. He formerly lived in the town of Sparta and has many relatives in that vicinity. He was 79 years and 11 days old,and died of lagrip and pneumonia. I knew him in Oregon, and he was a very fine man and respected by all who knew him." Also in the obituary article it states that on the same day the following additional particulars were received from Hiram J. Hartman of the village. "April 23, 1904, at 10:30 a.m. occurred the sad death of John Hartman at the age of 79 years and 11 days. He was a son of the late Henry Hartman of Sparta and was sick only eight days with lagrippe and pneumonia. When a young man he worked in Leonard's tannery in Dansville and afterwards went to Oregon and entered into business. He leaves a wife who lying in critical condition and to whom the news of her husband's death has not been imparted and also three children, besides brothers and sisters to mourn his loss....."
