- Carl H. Deal Jr., 71, of Houston, Tex., died Friday (May 17, 1991) after a long illness.
Born Dec. 26, 1919, in Spartenburg, S.C., a son of Carl and Caroline Rhodes Deal, he was married for 47 years to Virginia Zerfass, a former Dansville resident, who survives.
He spent his early years in Songho, Korea, where his parents taught in a mission school. He earned a Bachelor's degree and a PH.D degree from Duke University in 1942 and 1944. Mr. Deal was a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Beta Kappas honor societies.
He retired in 1983 after four decades with Shell Development Co. in Emeryville, Calif., and Westhollow Research Labs in Houston.
From 1962 to 1963, he and his family were in an exchange program in Amsterdam, Netherlands, with Royal Dutch Shell. He was recognized internationally for his patents and other contributions to the field of solution chemistry.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Carl III of San Marcos, Milton of Austin, Tex., and Nicolas of San Marcos; a daughter, Julia Carter of Sacremento, Calif.
A memorial service was conducted in Houston and burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville.
