- Celwyn Emerson Hopkins, 79, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009. He was born in Galveston, Texas on April 9, 1929, but grew up in Dallas, where he graduated from Highland Park High School in 1947. He attended Mississippi State University and while there, served as a lay reader at rural Episcopal churches. He later graduated from SMU with a B.A. in Economics. In 1952, he entered the Air Force as a 2nd lieutenant and married Margaret Kenney of San Antonio in May. In early 1953, the Air Force sent him to Korea, where he served as the officer on 24-hour duty at the communication center in Pan Mun Jom. He transferred messages from the field officers during the cease fire and received the Bronze Star for outstanding duty.
In civilian life, he lived with his family for 20 years in California, where he set up distributorships in the Western United States for the automobile aftermarket. He then lived 20 years in Clearwater, Florida, where he was executive secretary of an association of lead battery manufacturers, and editor and publisher of its worldwide trade magazine. The association sent him to battery conventions in many European and Asian countries, and he received many compliments on his editorials for the magazine, ?The Battery Man.? He retired with his wife, Margaret, to the Boerne area in 1998.
In his spare time, Celwyn enjoyed big band music and blues, and as a high school student, he loved chauffering the bishop for the Episcopal diocese of Dallas. He understood very well the composition of radio, electricity and machinery, and had a talent for fixing anything broken for anyone, wherever he lived.
Celwyn is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret K. Hopkins, his children, Mary Elizabeth Hopkins of Austin, Helen Mell of Los Altos, CA, and Ann Adams of Blanco, and five grandchildren, John and Anna Adams of Blanco, and Amanda, Natalie and Emma Mell of Los Altos, CA. He was preceded in death by his son, Celwyn Emerson Hopkins, Jr., his brother Arthur Paschal ?Jim? Hopkins of San Antonio, his sister Undine Caroline Steere of Dallas, his mother Helen Natalie Hampton Hopkins and his father, Arthur Augustus Hopkins, both of Dallas. Services will be on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 3:00pm at St. Mark?s Episcopal Church in San Antonio. Funeral arrangements will be by Porter Loring in San Antonio.
