- Chileab Smith was born circa 1635 at Wethersfield, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was the son of Lt. Samuel Smith and Elizabeth Smith. Chileab Smith married Hannah Hitchcock, daughter of Luke Hitchcock and Elizabeth Gibbons, on 2 October 1661 at Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. In 1663 Chileab Smith was a new proprietor at Hadley, Massachusetts.1 He was appointed Surveyor of Highways on 27 January 1663 at Hadley, Massachusetts. He was appointed along with Edward Church. Some of the present-day roads in and near Hadley owe their location to his early work. On 19 February 1669 at Hadley, Massachusetts, Chileab Smith signed a petition to the Governor which opposed imposts and customs on goods imported after 1 Mar 1669. In October 1672 at Hadley, Massachusetts, Chileab Smith signed a petition to the General Court to request an addition to the plantation to make it 8 miles square. He was made a freeman in 1673 at Hadley, Massachusetts. He was a townsman in 1675 at Hadley, Massachusetts. He was a townsman in 1681 at Hadley, Massachusetts. He was made trustee of the Hadley grammar school on 8 June 1686 at Hadley, Massachusetts.1 He was added as a member of the Hadley School Committee in 1687 at Hadley, Massachusetts.1 He was a townsman in 1690 at Hadley, Massachusetts. He was made an Ensign in the Hadley Militia in 1692 at Hadley, Massachusetts. He was a townsman in 1696 at Hadley, Massachusetts. In 1714 at Hadley,Massachusetts, Chileab Smith was chosen to seat persons in the new meeting house. He was chosen along with his nephew, Deacon John Smith,son of Philip, and 5 others. Chileab Smith died on 7 March 1731 at Hadley, Massachusetts; Both Hadley Families by Lucius Boltwood Lt. Samuel Smith by James W. Hook say he died at age 95. The tombstone very plainly reads 96 years. It does not say in his 96th year, but age 96 years, perhaps indicating he was born early in 1635 or after March 1634.
