- HORNELL - Harold Jacob Stewart, 80, of Webbs Crossing Road, formerly
of Hornell Street, died Monday evening (Oct. 16, 2006) at Roswell Park
Cancer Institute in Buffalo, following a long illness.
A native and life resident of Hornell, he was born July 9, 1926, and
was the son of Harold and Louise (Schwartz) Stewart.
Harold was a graduate of Hornell High School (class of 1944). He was
employed for several years at the former Hornell Brewery and later
worked at Foster Wheeler Corporation in Dansville. In 1960, he
established Stewart's Esso Service Station which later became
Stewart's Exxon Service Station located in North Hornell. In 1975, he
moved the business to Seneca Street in Hornell and the business became
Stewart's Sunoco. He retired in 1990.
He was a charter member of the Service Station Operators of Western
New York, a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge, a member of the Hornell
Masons, and a member of the former St. Paul's United Church of Christ.
Harold enjoyed woodworking and wood carving. He was an avid fisherman
and enjoyed spending time with his family at Waneta Lake and also the
winter months of Lakeland, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Stewart; and also his
sister, Betty Panter Sherwood.
He was married Oct. 14, 1946, (60 years) to the former Doris Odell,
who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Richard (Faith) Stewart
of Ravena, Martin (Patty) Stewart of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Scott
(Debbie) Stewart of Hornell; two daughters, Cyndi (Don) Besig of
Gananda and Julie (Richard) Rubin of Lido Beach; two sisters, Clara
(Bradley) Brewer of Millerton, Pa., and Beverly (Joe) White of
Suffern; 12 grandchildren, Sharon Frederick, Lori James, Kevin Besig,
Sarah Stewart, Sally Stewart, Bradley Stewart, Brian Stewart, Jason
Stewart, Melissa Rubin, Todd Rubin, Chelsea Rubin and Caitlin Rubin;
three great-grandchildren, Alexis Frederick, Aidan Frederick and Aidan
Stewart; several nieces and nephews.
The family of Harold Jacob Stewart will receive friends from 2-4 and
7-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St.,
Hornell, where funeral and committal services will be held at noon,
Friday, Oct. 20, with Rev. Roger Reed officiating. Burial will be in
Arkport Cemetery.
