- Helen L. Carney, 96, of Depot Road, died peacefully at home on Monday (March 29, 2010) after a short illness.
She was born in Sparta on Jan. 11, 1914, the daughter of the late Herbert and Sarah (Kidd) Kiehle. On June 30, 1937, she was married to Francis C. Carney, who predeceased her on Nov. 20, 1998. She was also predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Emily Paige Bickert, and her brothers Raymond and Edward Kiehle.
Helen was a graduate of Dansville High School and received a two-year degree from Alfred State College. She taught at the American Country School in Sparta. Helen had also worked as a food service worker in the Dansville Central School District for 15 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Sparta Center United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and financial secretary for many years. She was a long time supporter of the local 4-H programs.
Surviving are four daughters, Jane (Warren) Corbin of Charleston, S.C., Jean (Lyle) Bassage of Walworth, Ann (John L.) Davis of Sparta, Mary Elnicky of Rochester; a son, William (Susan) Carney of Big Flats; 12 grandchildren, Jeffrey Corbin, Stacie (Tommy) Webster, Kara (Bradley) Bishop, Dawn (Duane) Kittleson, Denise (Scott) Bickert, Kelly (Peter) Eirich, Eric Davis, John Robert (JoAnne), Christopher (Brooke) and Sarah Elnicky, Jonathan Carney and Elizabeth (Joseph) Escobar; nine great-grandchildren, Evan and Clayton Webster, Abigail and Zoe Bishop, Andrew and Rebecca Kittleson, Caitlin and Kylie Bickert, and Aidan Elnicky.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hindle Funeral Home, Inc., 271 Main St., Dansville, where services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. David Hotchkiss officiating. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery Dansville. Online remembrances may be left at HindleFuneralHome.com
