- From an old deed of the Auten family, and according to Fred Sisser,
genealogist of New Jersey, David Putman, or Potman, married a girl by
the name of Helena. The name Lena, which is short for Helena, is used
by descendants of David Potman, [the Traphegan's] but the name
Elizabeth is not used, which further suggests that David married a
Helena. I have guessed that Helena was a Van Gelder, but that is just
a guess. David may have married twice.
From the naming of the Traphegan family, it seems also that Helena's
father was a Abraham, or perhaps, Evert or Ephraim [Van Gelder]. The
name Martin was not used by the descendants of David Potman, while
Helena, or Lena, and Abraham were used by his descendants.
David Potman witness the baptism of Evert Tiis in Middletown, New
Jersey. I think perhaps David was an uncle of the child by his wife,
Helena, whose father may have been an Abraham, Evert, or Ephraim.
Thanks, Mark.
