He was born in Dansville, the only son of Edward and Monica Applin.
Leo was a veteran of World War II, having served 36 months as a Master Sergeant in the South Pacific. Following his retirement as a payroll supervisor with Ward LaFrance of Elmira, he continued as an active member of the Elmira Umpires Association. A reception in his honor was held after 20 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Earley) Applin; sons Michael and Christopher and daughter Kathleen of Elmira; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary and Ken Randall, and Jean Berger, all of Dansville, John and Doris Earley of Pine City, NY, and Kathryn and Charles Besanceney of Mansfield, PA; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Interment was in Woodlawn National Cemetery with full military honors. (GCE, November 30, 1995, p4)
