  Notes	According to his and his widow's pension record; William and Catherine knew each other since they were "little children." I have been unable to determine when they both came to the US, however, I would assume that they came over with their parents, as they were married in NYC in 1853, or they both came over shortly before their marriage together. William enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 and was wounded (shot in the upper right arm) in 1862 at the battle of Fair Oaks,VA. Upon returning home to NYC and healing from his wound. He moved his family to Pittsburgh,PA. Here he worked as a laborer struggling daily with the pain in his right arm (and weakness-muscle was destroyed when the bullet traveled through his bicep). Upon arrival in Pittsburgh he regularly went by the name Gallagher. His wife stated in the pension record that the name change was caused by William "not getting along so peaceably with his father as was desirable and getting along very well and affectionately with his mother and her maiden name being Gallagher he my dead husband adapted it and went about under said name of Gallagher yet he enlisted and served in the Northern Army under his true and correct name, that of William Dugan." The marriage date of July 3 1853 and place of New York City are mentioned in the pension record by Catherine, she also states her maiden name as Granahan (her children's death records write Graham, apparently an error on their part). Also, that as of 1879 they had seven children (6 girls). The oldest is shown in the records of NYC born in Manhattan 1854. 1855 New York Census (Castleton, Richmond Co.,NY): William Dugan, 23, Ireland, Laborer, 1 year in town.
