- Canisteo, N.Y. - Marcia L. Merring, 77, of East Main Street, passed away peacefully Thursday (April 7, 2011) at St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell, surrounded by her family, after an extended illness.
Marcia was born April 7, 1934 in Hornell, to Carl R. and Catherine E. (Bowles) Roosa. On June 15, 1957 in Hornell she married Donald S. Merring who survives and resides in Canisteo.
She was a graduate of Hornell High School class of 1952 and a graduated from the St. James School of Nursing in 1955. Shortly after graduating from nursing school she worked for a period of time at the Bath VA Hospital, the former Foote Nursing Home in Canisteo and was Director of Nursing at Hornell Gardens. In 1970 she became the Canisteo Central School nurse retiring in 1996. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Canisteo.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, Donald S. Merring, Marcia is survived by her five children: sons, Thomas (Virginia) Merring of Pittsford, David Merring of Almond, Eric 'Rick' (Belinda) Merring of Canisteo, and Dana (Lynda) Merring of Hornell, and one daughter, Lynda (Doug) Drake of Hornell. She is also survived by a brother, Carl D. Roosa of Magnolia, Del., and two sisters, Barbara Hicks of Hornell, and Delores (Robert) Gerhart of Bath; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St. in Canisteo, where a funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Robert Dean, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Canisteo.
