- Elmer R. Lander, 89, formerly of Garlinghouse Road, passed away early Wednesday morning (April 8, 2009) at the Steuben County Healthcare Facility in Bath, where he had resided for the past several years.
Elmer was born April 18, 1919 in South Dansville, the son of Erwin and Lorena (Wellington) Lander. He resided in the South Dansville area throughout his younger years. On Feb. 21, 1942, Elmer entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II until his honorable discharge on Nov. 24, 1945. Elmer and Ila Mae Buckley were married on Sept. 8, 1947 in Reno, Nev. Together they celebrated over 59 years of marriage prior to Ila Mae's passing away June 14, 2007. Elmer and Ila Mae moved to Garlinghouse Road in 1947 and remained there together until he moved to the nursing home facility. Elmer's employment career included a couple of companies. He was employed by Foster Wheeler for a few years prior to working at the Wood Croftery in Wayland for over 35 years. He retired from there in 1981. Elmer enjoyed camping and snowmobiling throughout the years and he loved playing pitch. He was always puttering in the garage, making different items out of wood for his children and he especially enjoyed restoring his 1951 Chevy. Elmer enjoyed driving it in the summer and getting it ready for storage in the winter.
Elmer was predeceased in life by his parents, Erwin and Lorena Lander; his wife, Ila Mae Lander; his brothers, Earl and Milton Lander; his sisters, Ruth Schubmehl, Mildred Simons, Florence Harloff and Cecil Curtis.
He is survived by his children, Judie (James) Lander-Stamper of Marco Island, Fla., Jerry (Debbie) Lander of Wayland, Charles (Ann) Lander of Wayland, Jane (Scott) Young of Atlanta, and Diane (Jim) Day of Dansville; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Doris (Ray) Alger of N.C.; along with several nieces and nephews. Elmer's family and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. His funeral service will take place privately at the convenience of his family. Memorial contributions in Elmer R.
