- Arthur Bevin or Bevins was probably born about 1653, possibly in Yate, Gloucestershire, England (Yate is next to Horton Parish, which is where Henry Luce is said to have come from, and they were neighbors in West Tisbury, Massachusetts). Charles Banks in Volume III (page 522) of "The history of Martha's Vineyard, Dukes County, Massachusetts" states that an Arthur Bevan lived in Yate Parish and that it is 4 miles from Horton Parish (home to a Luce family which might have included Henry Luce). Banks strongly believed they came from these two closely situated parishes in Gloucestershire, and this explained why they were neighbors on Martha's Vineyard.
Arthur probably married his wife Mary (maiden name unknown) about 1675, and they immigrated to West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, about 1676. In 1682, Arthur Bevin bought several tracts of land on the west side of Old Mill Brook on the road leading to North Tisbury, including a house and lot from Thomas West. On 13 January 1686, he bought land from Josias the Indian but this upset the town because Josias had apparently agreed not to sell it without permission. On 15 June 1687, Arthur bought a lot from Nathan Skiffe: 40 acres bounded east by the river, north by Thomas West, and south by the highway which lies on the north side of Henry Lewis' lot.
Arthur served as a Town Commissioner in 1688. In 1690, he sold a 20 acre lot to Robert Cathcart. He sold the rest of his holdings from 1682-1694, and they moved to Glastonbury, Connecticut in late 1694 or 1695 (where Arthur received a land grant in 1696). Arthur Bevin died on 15 December 1697, Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, and his wife Mary died on 18 December 1712 (Middletown, Connecticut). Arthur's estate was valued at 269 pounds, 10 shillings, 9 pence, of which 45 pounds was his, 10-acre plot at Middletown, Conn.
