He failed to rally and his condition became critical during the night.

Mr. Trine´s career as a banker is that store of his rise from bank janitor and messenger boy to the president's office over a period of 39 years. The bank closed two years after he became president, due chiefly to depreciation of farm values, but when the receivership was closed for yours later, the depositors had been paid 90.214 percent of their money.

      Entered Bank in 1885

As a boy of 18, ¨Charlie¨ Trine entered the employ of the Marshalltown State bank May 29, 1885, as a collector and janitor. At that time the bank´s personal consisted only of Albert F. Balch, cashier and Phineas S Balch, assistant cashier. Young Tine´s duties were in keeping up the fire´s, sweeping out the running errands. He was made teller Dec 5, 1892. And served in that capacity until Dec 13, 1889. When P.S. Balch became cashier and Mr. Trine was made assistant cashier.

Mr. Tine was advanced to the position of cashier of the bank, Jan 20, 1914 and on June 23rd was elected vice president on the death of George A. Turner. He succeeded to the presidency on the bank May 19, 1924 following the death of A. F. Balch.

During his 41 years of service with the bank he saw its deposits grow from $78,000 to more than $1,000,000.

Following the closing of the bank April 15, 1926, which cost him his personal fortune, he entered the general insurance business, operating the C.C. Trine Insurance agency.

      School Secretary 9 years

He was appointed secretary of the Marshalltown school district July 1, 1928, and was re'elected to that position by the board each year, serving more than nine years. His records as secretary frequently were praised by state examiners and last July, state checkers said that his itemized statements were the clearest that had come to their attention.

Charles Clarke Trine was a native of Marshalltown, born in this city July 2, 1866, the younger son of Eliza Jane and Edwin Trine, the latter one of the pioneer harness makers of this city. Except for three years when he lived in the Third ward, all of his life was spent in the Second ward of Marshalltown.

He married Miss Katherine Niblock at Colfax, Wash., August 15, 1893, the ceremony being performed by the bride´s father, Rev. J. H. Niblock, who previously had been minister of the First Presbyterian church here. They had one daughter, now Mrs. George E. Springer of Minneapolis, Minn.
