- DANSVILLE, Elmer C. Smith, 89, of Valley View Court in Dansville died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at Noyes Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 18, 1910 in Dansville, the son of the late Clair and Lena (Hulbert) Smith. He was married July 18, 1946 in the Dansville Presbyterian Church to Harriet C. (Campbell) Smith to whom he was married for 53 years.
Elmer was a 1928 graduate of Dansville Central School, the first class to graduate from the new school. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II from 1942-1945. Elmer had been employed as a teller at the former Merchants and Farmers Bank, now HSBC; and the Citizens Bank and Trust Co., now Fleet Bank. He was deputy Livingston County Treasurer from 1950-1957, and was the office manager of Dansville Chrysler Plymouth retiring in 1976 after 19 years of service. Elmer was a 50 plus-year member and elder of the Dansville Presbyterian Church; a 50 plus-year Mason and member of the Phoenix Lodge 115, F & AM, the Opportunity Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons, and the Daniel Goho American Legion Post 87. Besides his wife Harriet, he is survived by a daughter, Karen (James) Lawall of East Greenville, P.A.; a sister-in-law, Arlene Putney of Dansville; a cousin, Marilyn Lemen of Dansville; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chamberlin Funeral Home, Inc. 73 Main St., Dansville, where a memorial service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Boohr officiating. A Masonic prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 7 p.m. this evening. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
