- HORNELL - Joyce M. Scholla, 79, of 11 Preston Ave., passed away Friday morning (March 2, 2007) at Hornell Gardens, where she had resided for nearly two months.
Born in the Town of Fremont, Aug. 18, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Bessie Davis Burdett.
A lifelong resident of Hornell, Joyce grew up at the family homestead on Big Creek before moving to Hornell, where she graduated from Hornell High School with the class of 1946.
After graduation she began her employment with Westinghouse in Bath, the former Corbin Wood Products and the former Newberry Store in Hornell, before she devoted her time to raising her family.
Joyce was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell and served as a volunteer for RSVP and the Hornell Public Library.
She enjoyed the time she spent reading and watching TV.
Her family includes her son, Richard Scholla of Douglasville, Ga.; her daughter, Nancy Gurney of Hornell; her sister, Lois (John) Giglio of West Seneca; and her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Dorr Burdett and her sister, Gladys Boag.
Calling hours are from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will take place following calling hours at 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. David Kilgore officiating. Interment will be in the Fremont Cemetery, Stephens Mills.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Hornell Public Library, 64 Genesee St., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
