- GEORGE WEST DIES IN ROCHESTER
George R. West , who died at Rochester on Saturday was for years one of the most conspicuous characters on the streets of Canandaigua, owing to his great size. At one time he weighed 400 pounds, but of late years had been ill at several times, from heart trouble and other complications, so that his weight at the time of death was over 100 pounds less than when eh was in health. For about thirty years Mr. West, was commonly known as "Butter" West, drove a dray in Canandaigua going to Rochester about three years ago to take position with the Rochester Railway company. He was born in Angelica, Allegany County, in 1843. He came to Canandaigua early in life. When less than 15 years of age he went into the trucking business being provided with an old fashioned two wheeled cart. West was 19 years old when he enlisted in the regular army in 1862, serving in the Eleventh U.S. Infantry till he received his honorable discharge.
