Carol was the third of six children born to Harold and Ethel (Carman) Varns on April 5, 1935 in Egan, SD. Her family moved to Flandreau, SD in 1939, and she graduated from Flandreau High School in 1953. She played the tuba and was in All-State Band for four years and All-State Chorus. Carol married Wayne Parsley on October 3, 1953 in Flandreau where they lived until 1957. Then they began farming in Blinsmon Township, then moved to a farm in Alliance Township in 1964. Wayne and Carol especially enjoyed ballroom dancing on the weekends. Wayne preceded her in death August 11, 1993. Carol moved into Flandreau in the fall of 1995. She was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters. Carol enjoyed music, weaving, quilting, gardening, watching Wheel of Fortune and Antiques Roadshow. She loved serving at church, taking communion to shut-ins, reading to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, socializing with friends of all ages, and was genuinely interested in what people had to say. Carol loved her family and would stay up until all hours, reveling in their company; she was afflicted with FOMO (fear of missing out).
Carol was preceded in death by her husband Wayne; three grandchildren; and her sister Kaye.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Flandreau, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 4:00 – 7:00 pm Wednesday with a 7:00 pm prayer service followed by a Catholic Daughter rosary at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
