- Norman P. Simons, 64, of 33 Morey Ave. in Dansville died Thursday (June 25, 1987) in Noyes Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
He was born Oct. 19, 1922, a son of Frank and Caroline Strickniss Simons. A resident of Dansville most of his life, Mr. Simons was employed by the Village of Dansville Water Department, serving as department foreman until retiring in 1985.
An Army 11th Armored Division veteran of World War II, he received a Grand Cross of Homage from the Military Order of the Ardennes for service in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Simons was commander and a life member of Frank J. Casbolt Post 6780, Veterans of Foreign Wars; a member of Daniel Goho American Legion Post 87; Disabled American Veterans Post 170 in Mt. Morris; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1130 in Dansville and the Southern Tier and Western New York Water Works association.
Mr. Simons was a 39-year member of the Jackson Hose Co. of the Dansville Fire Department and an operator of the Cooperative Weather Station in Dansville for the U.S. Weather Service for 25 years, maintaining and reporting daily data to the federal agency.
He had assisted many community organizations including the Noyes Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where he became well-known for his fund raising activities of wearing the tall chef's hat and white jacket at the sidewalk sales which was a major fund-raiser for the group.
Surviving are his wife, Jane LaPiana Simons; a daughter, Linda Lemen of Dansville; two step-daughters, Dr. Mary Lou Meyers of Pittsford and Mary White of Rochester; a step-son, Michael Meyers of Rochester; two grandchildren.
A service was conducted in the Hindle Funeral Home here Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Paul Shoop officiating. Burial was in Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville.
