- Elziabeth was adopted by the Dezell family after the death of her
biological father in Sep 1913.
CANISTEO - Elizabeth (Neree) Hodson Burdette, 91, of 5th Street, died
Monday (March 1, 2004) at McAuley Manor, North Hornell, following a
prolonged illness.
Born Feb. 20, 1913, in Moravia, she was the daughter of Kenneth R. and
Henrietta Thomas Dezell. She was married Dec. 10, 1939, in Genesee,
Pa., to Charles K. Burdette Sr., who died in 1996. She was also
predeceased by a stepson, Robert Duncan Burdette, in 2001.
Her youth was spent in Syracuse, where she graduated from Nottingham
High School. She had resided most of her life in the Town of Howard.
Mrs. Burdette was librarian of the Howard Public Library for 20 years,
from 1974 to 1994.
Following retirement, she was a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of
America in Bath. She attended Buena Vista Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan J. Powers of Rochester,
Barbara (Richard) Metzler of Manheim, Pa., Mary E. Burdette of
Grafton, N.H.; a son, Charles K. Burdette Jr. of Washington Crossing,
Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Burdette of Hornell; nine
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held
at 2 p.m. April 24 at the Buena Vista Wesleyan Church, Buena Vista
Road, Canisteo, with the Rev. Daniel Pickering Sr. officiating. Final
interment will be in Howard Cemetery.
