    Notes
    • Cornet Joseph Parsons was one of the founders of Springfield and
Northampton, Massachusetts. It is believed he came to New England on
the ship Transport of London in 1635. On 15 July 1636 he witnessed a
deed by which the Indians conveyed to William Pynchon and others a
large tract of land on both sides of the Connecticut River including
what is now Springfield. The settlement of Northampton began in 1654
and Joseph Parsons removed there that year. Joseph and Mary lived in
Boston for a short time, some where between 1675 and 1678. On 15 May
1675 Joseph Parsons, then of Northampton, a merchant, purchased a
warehouse in Boston, and on 26 May 1676 he purchased a piece of land
adjoining his home there. By 1678 he was back in Northampton, but in
1679 or 1680 he and his wife Mary had returned to Springfield.
On 07 October 1678, the General Court appointed Joseph as Cornet of
the Hampshire Troop of Horse, the Cornet being the color-bearer and
third in command in a British regiment of calvary. Joseph was active
in town affairs in both Springfield and Northhampton, serving as
highway surveyor, overseer of fences, juror and selectman. As a fur
trader, miller, and merchant, he becamea wealthy man, owning land in
      Springfield, Northampton, Boston, Northfield,Massachusetts and
Simsbury, Connecticut. The inventory of his estate, recorded 25 March
1684, amounted to L2088 9s, one of the largest early estates probated
      in Hamphshire County.
