    Notes
    • Harmon is said to have come to the Dansville area in 1807 from Pennsylvania. In 1810 he built the house just north of the Elementary School, across the road from Shay's Service(Main Street, Rte 63). The house which "still" stands, was operated as a tavern for many years by his son John Hartman. Harmon's occupation was that of a taylor, farmer and operator of a distillery in Sparta. Harmon bequeathed the distillery to his son Henry. The following is a chronological list of records regarding Harmon Hartman. (not including his children's birth and baptismal records in PA)

    • 1772, petition to the Orphans Court of Northampton Co.,PA, by Herman Hartman, calling himself the son of George Hartman, of Lowhill,Northampton Co.,PA - no other children of George petition the Orphans court... it is assumed then that Herman is the son of George's first wife and his brother Christian being older than 16 would not need to petition the courts...

    • Private Hermon Hartman enlisted May 8th 1781 in Capt Peter Kooken's Company of the First Class Northampton Militia in the Service of the United States commanded by Lt. Col. Nicholas Kern.

    • 27 Dec 1781, tax list for Macungie,Northampton Co.,PA

Christian Hartman(1753-1841) of Northampton Co.,PA, served in Revolution(DAR #287215), son of John Hartman, an Innkeeper and Gristmill owner(d.1777) and Eva Mary Hartman).

    • 1786 tax list Macungie,Northampton Co.,PA- 141 acres, 2 horses, 2 cattle, taxed 16.0 (in this tax list his trade is listed as a taylor, but was also a miller in town. (Also listed is Christian Hartman, occupation--Hatter., NOTE: There may be two Christian Hartman in this area of Northamton County, one a brother of Harmon and the other a cousin)

    • 1788 tax list Macungie,Northampton Co.,PA- 141 acres, 3 horses, 2 cattle, taxed 1.3.0

    • 1798-1800 sentenced to six months in prison and fined $150 for taking part in Fries's Rebellion (Direct House Tax Rebellion). Other participants include Philip Ruth, Jacob Klein, Valentine Kuder and others including the leader John Fries. Most went on trial for treason, were convicted and sentenced to death. President Adams pardoned all and the law was soon after repealed.
      • Excerpts from "Fries's Rebellion: The Enduring Struggle for the American Revolution, By Paul Douglas, 2012.
        • Hartman gave the two a similar welcome, exclaiming that "he had his gun ready," that he and his Macungie neighbors were prepared, and that if "forced" they would "cut off the heads of those Stampers." p.105
        • Hartman assisted in coordinating resistance, as did families, preachers, militia captains, and associations. Farmers came to millers regularly to process their wheat and rye, and Engleman and Hartman stored it for them and likely traded... p.106
        • Hartman, and headed back to Bethlehem the next day. p.125
