    Notes:

When about a year old his parents moved to Seneca County; lived there about 5 years, and moved to Tyrone,Schuyler Co.,NY. Joel being the oldest of the family, and in very moderate circumstance, it become his lot to be deprived of many of the advantages of aquiring an education which many even in those days of poor schools enjoyed. At the age of nineteen he commenced his time from his father for $75 and working on a farm (in Enfield,NY) by the month, when he was 24 years old he had not only paid his father, but saved enough to purchase 90 acres of land in Howard,NY, In 1878 he was an owner of 288 acres of excellant land. Joel was a staunch Republican and during the Civil War ever by word and action maintained our nations cause, he gave his sons to his country. His sons Horace and Abram, both died in the Civil War (Horace Russell was in the 109th NY Regt. and died in Beltsville,MD 27 Oct 1862; Abram B. The value of his estate was $4,180.52, including 107 acres of farm land in Howard,NY.

  3. A farmer from Howard was driving down Main Street[Hornell] yesterday afternoon behind a pair of spirited horses, when the animals took fright near the furniture factory and started on a brisk run. It was impossible to hold them and they ran across the bridge at high speed. In turning after crossing the bridge they upset the wagon and threw the man out. His head struck
on a stone cutting a bad gash in his forehead. The team came to a stand still near the harness shop. Dr. Parkhill dressed the man's wound and he was soon able to proceed on his way home with a borrowed wagon, his own having been wrecked. The farmer's name was Joel Russell, somewhat advanced in years. He is not considered seriously injured."

    Notes:

After growing up in Fremont he married Florence, and they moved to Rochester where they lived until 1930, upon removing to Hornell,NY. He took a job with Peck Motors in Hornell and was an auto mechanic ther for 14 years. In 1948 he established his own auto mechanic business, "Auto Specialized Service," retiring from his business in 1967. During ownership of that business he employed his cousin, Charles Davis as well as Florence's nephew, Bernard Smith Sr., who he later sold the shop to. Bernard went inot partnership with his son, Bernard Jr, who currently (1995) is in partnership with his son, Bradley Smith. The business is now located in Arkport,NY and still carries the name that Murry gave to it. He was custodian at the Hornell Masonic Temple from 1967 to 1984. He was a past master of Evening Star Lodge No.44 F&A.M. in Hornell, a past high priest of Steuben Chapter No.101 Royal Arch Masons in Hornell, a past master of the former Big Creek Grange and was a member and past president of the St.Paul's United Church of Christ. Murray would often "call" at square dances in the Hornell/Big Creek area and many times at Demons Ponds Dance Hall in Howard. He would also play his fiddle(violin) whenever he was asked. He was an avid golfer all his life and was known for his "straight shot, right down the middle". There is a tee maker for the 12th hole at Twin Hickory Golf Course in Hornell that has been named in his memory. In July, 1955 they began proceedings to adopt a then 3 moth old baby girl, Elizabeth Ann. Florence stayed at home to raise their daughter. Florence and Murray were involved in a motor vehicle accident on November 27, 1987 in the town of Hornellsville. Murray was driving their car and was broadsided by an oncoming vehicle. He was killed instantly and Florence was rushed to St.James Hospital in Hornell where the operated. She was in and out of consciousness for the next 30 hours, but passed away at noon on Sunday. On December 2, 1987, they were laid to rest, together, in the Howard Cemetery, beside Murray's mother and father.

Eulogy for Beatrice K. Smith August 8, 2000
    Rev. Richard R. Hubbard

Dear family and friends, we gather here this afternoon to celebrate the life of Beatrice Smith. We give thanks to God that hers was a long and rich life, busy and active until the end. She and her husband, Herman, can rest easy that they leave a living legacy of their three daughters, Dorothy, Marian and Nancy, and their husbands and eleven,
grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren'. From a biblical perspective, they were truly blessed.
I am thankful that when I first met Bea, she was very much alive. Indeed, her vigor and wit seemed to belie her age. I had been warned that Bea could be a ?woman of strong opinions". One would need to be to make it to 96, still full of vigor and vitality. My impression, at the end was that the time had come. S he had lived her life as fully as possible, for as long as possible. Neither age nor immobility dampened her interest in life and those around her. Her vitality alone should inspire us when we start to feel older and tireder...
I asked the family for some help in telling the story of her life. She grew up on the family farm in Hornell. One can only guess at the changes she saw around her over the course of her lifetime, from horse and buggy to automobiles, from wood stoves to electric range, yet with others of her generation she took it in stride. With five brothers and two sisters, she never lacked for company, though privacy was probably hard to come by.
She married Herman Smith, a mold maker at Ingersoll Rand, in 1922. They had four children, Dorothy, Marian, Nancy and Clair. Clair, the only son, died in the early 1970's. We pray that he is now gathered with his mother and father in that heavenly mansion.
I was told that Bea was quite a baker, who as a homemaker, augmented the family income by baking bread and rolls every Friday, and never had any left over. She also took in washings to help, and being a farm girl and one of eight children, was no stranger to hard work. After her children were grown she worked at the Corning Hospital laundry, retiring in 1968. And through the years in Painted Post, she was an active and dedicated member of the Methodist Church. Rev. Jack Bunde, the Chaplain at Coming Hospital, said Bea always faithfully attended his services, and loved to sing hymns (which proves she was a real Methodist at heart). .
It was hard for her to leave her home. Is it ever easy for anyone? To leave behind a lifetime of memories, the scene of so many of the chapters of one's life. But change is always a part of our lives. We are all sojourners on a journey of life and time.
She moved to Green Meadows, where she enjoyed playing cards, hopefully not on Sundays. (Smile. I'm joking.) She enjoyed visiting with the friends and especially appreciated that her granddaughter, Janice Montgomery, worked there and woke her up each morning.
After breaking her ankle and time at Arnot Ogden and Coming Hospitals she moved to Founders Pavilion, where she needed rehabilitation. She made progress, but now needed a wheelchair. Some people might have given up, or withdrawn, but not Bea. She kept as busy as ever and enjoyed playing checkers and games with Randy Dann. I am told that on a trip to Niagara Falls, he introduced her to a group of men as Miss America 1918. From what I hear she gave as good as she got. She was alert, very much alive.
She enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She kept busy knitting, crocheting and, of course, playing cards and check.ers. Reportedly she hated to lose, but that's true of most of us. We'd rather win than lose, at the games we play. I think it would be fair to say Bea loved the playing as much as the winning, the fun, the friendship and fellowship that games can provide.
We all have our favorite foods and hers was maple walnut ice cream. It would be nice if the next time you have maple walnut ice cream you think of Bea, a reminder, a remembrance of a life rich in the things that truly matter: family, friends and faith.
    Time for family remembrance
It is hard to say good-bye to those we love, to let them go, to leave them in God's hands. But surely Bea's life was rich and blessed, full to the very end. So this afternoon I ask that you remember the life and love you shared, your times together, your shared joy and laughter as well as hurts and sorrow. None of us are perfect. We do the best we can, and some things we may do better than others. Now is the time to remember the best of Bea's life: her love of life, her love of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, her friends at Founders, Green Meadows, Corning Hospital, Painted Pos, her faith that gave her hope, strength and the courage to carry on faith and as active on our lives as she was in hers.
Let us pray. Almighty God, we give you thanks for the life of Beatrice Smith, for the life and love she shared with her family and friends, for her force of will and vitality of life, for long years and rich memories. Amen.

During that portion of her life she was not only a wife and mother, but a worker in the fields and preparer of meals for the entire farm crew. When Abby left the farm she became a village resident, a Churchville-Chili School Bus driver and part of the Riga Free Library staff. She loved to play baseball and horseshoes; but just as much as she enjoyed the world of music-playing the violin in The Trio, or 'fiddling' for square dances. She was an avid Contract Bridge player, a worker of crosswords puzzles and a woman who never tired of reading, weather it was poetry for her own enjoyment or reading to children to broaden their outlooks. Through all her life, Abby's faith remained strong. It was in her church that she found the strength she needed to deal with what came her way.

Steuben County News Service - "Couple Flees Burning Home"
Dairy farmer Shirley Burdett and his wife escaped to safety early yesterday with only the clothese they wore as fire destroyed their two story brick home on Route 70 at Big Creek, about four miles west of Howard. A lapse in telephone service delayed summoning fireman. Temperatures were below zero as Fremont and Howard fireman battled the blaze, finally reported at 6:45AM. A family spokesman said the couple was asleep in the downstairs bedroom and apparently was awakened by the roar of the flames. They got out of the house in their nightclothes through a front entrance, the spokesman said. Nothing was saved from the house, he said. The couple lived there alone. The Burdetts, after fleeing their home, drove to the nearby home of Stanley Drumm. Drumm, a son and son-in-law started for the Burdett place and encountered state police investigating an auto accident on Route 70. The trooper radioed for firefighters. The inside of the house was just one big ball of fire when we got there, said Fremont Fire Chief Richard Smith. He said cuase of the fire and amount of damages were not determined. The Burdetts were staying with a relative.

    Notes:

Donald Barron (1896-1924) was the middle of three children of Dr. William Barron and his wife Julia (nee Blakeslee) Barron. He was born on October 19, 1896 probably in Addison, Steuben County, New York. His father was a local physician. Donald had an older sister, Dorothy, born in October, 1893, and his younger brother, Blakeselee, came along in March, 1900. Those were the only children William and Julia had. In the 1900 and the 1910 censuses, the family was living at 37 Maple Street. Donald was inducted into the Army in Corning, New York on September 3, 1918. Under organizations are listed “Co M 2 Provisional Regt 156, Dep Brig to October 9, 1918” and “Co D 549 Engineers to discharge.” He was listed as a private. He apparently did not serve overseas. His discharge came on January 6, 1919. According to the 1920 census, the only Donald Barron I could find was living in Quincy, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, single and working as a steel worker in a ship yard. He died, based on his birthdate, probably at age twenty eight, though nothing has come up as to cause of death, date, etc.
