    Hannah Whitlock Baldwin was the first wife of Joseph Baldwin, married on Nov. 10, 1636 in High Wycombe, Co.Bucks, England. They set sail along with Joseph's two brothers, Nathaniel Baldwin and Timothy Baldwin, for America. By 1646, the three brothers and their wives were living in Milford, having first lived in New Haven. After Hannah's death in 1661, Joseph removed to Hadley, Mass. He became a freeman in 1666. Joseph married, second, Isabella Ward, widow of John Catlin and James Northam of Hartford. By her first marriage, Isabella was the mother of John Catlin Jr. Joseph married, third, Elizabeth Gibbons, widow of Luke Hitchcock and William Warriner.

    Following the Deerfield Massacre, Mary, "being held with the other prisoners in John Sheldon's house, gave a cup of water to a young French officer who was dying. He was perhaps a brother of Hertel de Rouville. May it not have been gratitude for this act that she was left behind when the order came to march? She died of grief a few weeks later."

    Notes:

    On Feb 29 1704, Deerfield had 41 houses with 291 people. Of these, 20 were soldiers. That night Sieur Hertel de Rouxville with 200 soldiers and 142 Abenaki and Caughnawaga Indians managed to scale the stockade on snowdrifts while the sentry slept. The sentry awoke and gave the alarm before all the houses had been surrounded, which undoubtedly saved some of the village. 165 persons were killed or captured and only 126 were left. The following day some of the survivors, reinforced by a small company from Hatfield under Captain Wells, pursued the War Party. They engaged the rear guard, losing the battle and nine more men., Widow Corse and her daughter Elizabeth were taken captive, but Ebenezer aged 12, and James aged 10, managed to hide and escape. The mother was killed on the trek to Canada. Elizabeth, her daughter, aged 8, survived. She never returned to her home. She grew up, married and had children in Canada.

    In 1704 Elizabeth was taken captive back to Canada after the attack onDeerfield, along with her mother, who was killed on the way by theIndians. Elizabeth became a convert to Catholicism, married, hadchildren, and lived her life as a French subject in Canada. Sheappears in the French records as Elisabeth Casse. In 1706 , aged ten, she asked to become a citizen. In 1712 she had anillegitimate daughter by an unknown father. This daughter died veryyoung. It was later that year that she was married for the first time. After a marriage of almost seventeen years her firsthusband died. Elisabeth must have been an attractive widow, for inless than a year she married a man younger than herself. She marriedsecondly Pierre Monet, the older brother of one of her sons-in-law.This marriage took place at La Prairie on 16 January 1730. After aneventful life she passed away at the age of 70 and was buried on 30January 1766 at La Prairie.
