    Notes:

Thursday, Jan 14th, being the anniversary of the 8Oth birthday of Mrs. Roger Whitikar, a number of her relatives gathered at her home, at her son Deloss', to congratulate
her upon her good health and comfortable condition, mentally and physically. After partaking of a chicken pic dinner they departed for their homes but not until each one had presented her with a memorial of the esteem and affection in which they held her and wishing Aunt Deal all the happiness tha t could come to her in this life.

George's son John and Weston remained in the Onondaga County area, Weston settling in Lysander. The rest of the Allen's eventually all moved to Allegany County between 1823 and 1824/5. Buried:
George is said to have been buried in what was the town of Alfred, but later became the town of West Almond. This would indicate he is buried somewhere in the southeast section of the current town of West Almond. NOTE: In 1872, A.Allen was living in this area of West Almond, as was A.Steward, C.Crandall, H.Steward. This is now known as Stewart Road ('J' shaped road). George is probably buried where A.Allen was living.

Came from Easton,Washington Co.,NY to Marcellus,Onondaga Co.,NY about 1796(when he purchased land from George Woosley with David Earls and Samuel Stratton Jr. 19Nov1796). Nathan and David Earl bought Samuel Stratton's portion on 07Mar1803, as Samuel was still residing in Easton and David and Nathan in Marcellus.

Nathan and Hannah sold land to Eleasor Burns 15Feb1804 also sold land the same day to John Wiltse. This land boarding John Wiltse and Thomas Tanner in Marcellus.

15th February 1804 NATHAN TANNER JR. and HANNAH his wife of the town of Marcellus sold to JOHN WILTSE for $100 part of lot number two in the first division of lot Number 53 in Marcellus and of a subdivision Number 4 containing seventy? three acres bordering THOMAS TANNER's land. (Book H p. 44-45 LDS film 0869183)

15th February 1804 NATHAN TANNER and HANNAH his wife sold to ELEAZER BURNS for $100 part of Lot number 2 in the first division of Lot 53 in Marcellus and of a subdivision Number five containing 73 acres & 39 chains bounded at the North East corner of JOHN WILTSEY'S land. Signed NATHAN TANNER JR., HANNAH TANNER (her mark) 15 February 1804 witnessed and recorded DAN BRADLEY (Book BB p. 244-245 LDS film 0870723)

Estimated died 1809, not in 1810 census. However, Nathan's, widow's new husband(Wm Foster) is living next to the same neighbors as Nathan was, so assumed the female in the household 45years is Hannah.

Decree of Partition (DP, page 66) published 1817 for property in Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY on lot 53. Names Heirs: William, Abel, Marsh, Anna, Foster, Nathan, Widow, Polly, Elizabeth(now Copp), and Sally (w/o Asahel Amidon)

On 14Mar1826, Foster Tanner sold to John Boggs land formerly owned by "the late Nathan Tanner deceased"

Nathan married Hannah Burns about 1782. Hannah (daughter of Francis Burns and Hannah Marsh) was born in 1766 in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., New York, USA; was christened on 25 Mar 1766 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., New York, USA; died on 15 May 1855 in Marcellus, Onondaga Co., New York, USA; was buried in Burns Cemetery, Marcellus, Onondaga Co., New York, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  7. 7.  Hannah Burns was born in 1766 in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., New York, USA; was christened on 25 Mar 1766 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., New York, USA (daughter of Francis Burns and Hannah Marsh); died on 15 May 1855 in Marcellus, Onondaga Co., New York, USA; was buried in Burns Cemetery, Marcellus, Onondaga Co., New York, USA.

    Notes:

1810 - Marcellus,NY - living with husband Wm Foster (no Nathan Tanner in town).

"Major Martin Cossit, a Revolutionary soldier, settled in the village in 1798. In March, 1799, the settlement of Thorn Hill was commenced by David Earll, Eleazer Burns, John Wiltsie, and Nathan Tanner, who came hither from Washington county on sleighs drawn by horse teams and oxen. Mr. Earll died upon his original farm and was succeeded by his son, William, who, upon his death, was followed by his son, Shepard. This is one of the very few instances in Marcellus of perpetuity of title and actual residence. Thorn Hill, situated in the southwest corner of the town, was named from Obadiah Thorn, a later comer, who was instrumental in establishing the post-office and mail route, and who was for many years a highly respected citizen and widely known as an extensive wool buyer. He subsequently removed to the Baldwin farm, near Skaneateles."

Albert Wiltsee in 1897 wrote of his grandfather, John Wiltsie that "He went to see a strictly Dutch girl" to get married and therefore be released from bondage of Mr. Buley (marriage was the only way he was told). We assume this is Polly Burns, his wife. With this bit of info I find in the History of Hoosac Valley that early(pre1746) "squatter" of the area of Pownal and Hooasc Valley included a "Franz Burns and his brother" - Many family history online note that Polly, Hannah, John and Eleazor's father was a Mr.Burns of Scottish descendant. I fine this not true at all. The record referenced is Virginia immigration records and there is no proof that the Virginia Burns is the same Burns in the Pownal areas. I think the new 'leaf' thing on Ancestry has taken some folks to believe all the suggestions are fact - and once one person adds that data, it multiplies without basis in real facts and soon the real clues are lost or become clouded.

My theory is that the Thorn Hill Burn's are descedants of Franz and/or his brother(unknown name) Burns that settled in the Hoosac Valley. Franz (Englishized to Francis - a common name in the Burns family).

    Notes:

According to the Narragansett Historical Register, Nathan Tanner was among the patriots who signed the "Test" to support the colonies against Great Britain (Other signers were Abel Tanner, William Tanner, William Tanner, Jr. and Francis Tanner, all of Hopkinton, RI). Nathan was admitted freeman in Hopkinton in 1760.

He served in the Revolutionary War in the 6th Regiment of Albany County, New York (See "DAR Patriot Index - Centennial Edition, Part 3, P-Z"; also "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State" by J.A. Roberts, Comptroller, pp 226-227)

He became an Elder in the Church of Christ of Botten Kill (later known as Bottskill Baptist Church) in Greenwich, New York on June 16, 1782 and served as its pastor from 1782-1794. In 1793, charges were preferred against him alleging certain improprieties, which grew out of his searching for money reportedly buried by British soldiers during the Revolutionary War. He was therefore excluded from the church on December 19, 1793, and shortly afterward "left the region".

  8. Albert Wiltsee in 1897 wrote of his grandfather, John Wiltsie that "He went to see a strictly Dutch girl" to get married and therefore be released from bondage of Mr. Buley (marriage was the only way he was told). We assume this is Polly Burns, his wife, d/o Francis Burns. The following is about this Francis' father and uncle, Francis/Franz.

In June 1746, while Franz Burns and his brother were hoeing in Cohoha cornfield, when they saw their barn on fire. On nearing their cottage door, they beheld a stack of French rifles and in their fright the brothers separated. One ascended the trail over the Kreigger Rocks and hastened up the valley to Fort Massachusetts, and the other turned up the river and met an ambuscade of warriors, who gave chase for his scalp. He plunged into the river and hid beneath piles of driftwood until the Indians retreated down the valley. The next morning, he rose from his hiding place and proceeded to the English fort, where to his surprise he found his brother.

In Marcellus, on the 14th inst., Mrs. Hannah Burns, widow of the late Francis Burns, aged 107.
(Skaneateles Columbian, Skaneateles, New York, Thursday, January 19, 1843)

  11. 1840 living in Marcellus with her daughter Polly Wiltse (John Wiltse head of household), shows in census as having a female over 100 years old. The only person over 100 in Marcellus in 1840.

  12. 1830 census with daughter Polly, census has her age between 80 and 90 (no one in the town is over 90 in the 1830 census). Putting her born after 1740, which makes more sense - lots of times when someone was over 80+ they would start to exaggerate the age and then it was assumed from then on. I doubt Hannah was 107 when she died (per her obit), probably closer to 97, still amazing for the early 1800's.

  13. Hannah's marriage records transcript shows name as Hannah Mesch. Two of her grandchildren were named Marsh (first name). So here Madian name is probably some variation of this Mesch/Marsh.
  14. Children:
    1. Samuel Burns was born in 1763 in Hoosick, Rensselaer Co., New York, USA; was christened in Nov 1763 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., New York, USA.
