724 | 1950 Obituary: "Mrs. Florence Cummins passed away at Munson Hospital Sunday morning after a protracted illness. Mrs. Florence Allen Cummins was born near Maple City in Leelanau county, where she lived to young womanhood. After attending high school in Traverse City and taking teacher's preparatory training at Central State Normal, she taught for several years in Leelanau and Grand Traverse schools. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ypsilanti Teachers College and took furthur study at Northwestern University, teaching for several years in the Detroit and Lansing schools until failing health compelled her retirement in February 1949 to her home at 1115 West Front Street. She leaves to mourn their loss, her husband Homer Cummins; her mother, Mrs. W. L. Allen of Dearborn; a brother, Hugh of Dearborn; and five sisters, Lenora Stephens of Charlevoix; Clara Tellis, Lillian Allen and Alta Newton, all of Detroit and Pauline Miller of Mt.Clemens; several nieces and nephews. A brother Clarence, was lost in the first World War. Funeral services will be held from the Hibbard chapel, Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 with Dr.Howard Towne officiating. 725 | 1953 Obituary: "Mrs. Walter L. Allen, 85, a former resident of Traverse City and Grand Traverse region, died Wednesday evening at Dearborn, at the home of her son Hugh. Mrs. Allen came here with her family from New York in 1887 and was well known in this city. Mr. Allen preceded her in death in 1942. Also preceding her in death was a son Clarence who died during World War I, and a daughter, Mrs. Homer Cummings, in 1950. Surviving are the son Hugh, of Dearborn, five daughters, Lenora Stephens of Charlevoix, Clara Tellis, Lillian Tellis, Alta Newton, all of Detroit, Pauline Millar of Bloomfield Hills; a brother Ben Nephew; a sister Lenora Rauber, both of New York; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She taught in Arcade,NY and Alfred-Almond Central School where she retired in 1983 as a secratary in the main office of Alfred-Almond. Paulena and Lewis live at 96 Main Street in Almond and spend their summers at Lake Demon in Howard,NY." She was born April 25, 1926 in Hornell, the daughter of James H. and Pauline Burdett Crossett. She was married July 12, 1952 in Almond to Lewis H. Wheeler, who died Nov. 2, 2004. She is also predeceased by a brother, Francis Crossett, of Bath. Paulena was a graduate of Alfred-Almond Central School in 1944, and received her bachelor degree in Physical Education from Ithaca College. She taught Physical Education for several years at Alfred-Almond School, where later she was a secretary/receptionist, retiring in 1987. Paulena worked for the Almond Board of Elections for 30 years, was a member of the 20th Century Club Library, the Hornell Lodge #620 WOOM, social member of the Arkport American Legion, and a member of the Almond Cooperative Extension Home Bureau. She was an avid bowler and secretary of the Wednesday night bowling league for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Carol (Jeffery) Chapin of Fairfax, Va.; two sons, Michael (Mary) Wheeler of Almond, Steven (Barbara) Wheeler of Bozeman, Mont.; one brother, James Howard Crossett Jr. of Wayland; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 2, 2005) at Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (Jan. 3, 2005) with the Rev. Steven Dygert officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Almond. Memorial contributions may be made to Home Care Hospice, 118 N. Main St., P.O.
