Elisha G. Quick
1850 - 1908 (58 years)-
Name Elisha G. Quick Birth 6 Jan 1850 Fremont, Steuben Co., New York, USA Gender Male Death 1 Sep 1908 Hornell, Steuben Co., New York, USA Burial Rural Cemetery, Hornellsville, Steuben Co., New York, USA Notes - Elisha was livery driver and involved in the tragic accident at dusk of February 1, 1905 when he was operating a sleigh which contained the party of prominent women of Hornell who were on the sleigh ride trip of the Universalist church when the sleigh was struck by a Shawmut train near Arkport and ten of the ladies were killed (he and three other ladies survived with serious injuries). He was later found guilty of "carelessness or very poor judgement" but the jury did not believe the facts warranted criminal prosecution. At the time of the accident he claimed he couldn't get the horses to stop with all the commotion from the ladies yelling on the sleigh and from the sleigh that had just crossed, as well as lights of the train coming.
Ironically, there was an incident five years prior in which is wife, Fannie, escape fatal injuries when her runaway horse was killed as it ran into a passenger train, she was thrown from the sleigh.
(Corning Journal, Wednesday, February 8, 1905; Bolivar Breeze, Thursday, February, 23, 1905; Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, Tuesday, March 8, 1900)
- Elisha died tragically three years later from a fractured skull after a fall while "filling water tanks in Pullman cars and as he was hurrying along the top of the cars dragging a long hose from one tank to another, the hose broke in two and he fell headlong to the platform with tremendous force."
