He was fond of music but not of traveling. Once in Washington, D.C.
he balked at getting out of the car 'to look at another thing!' But
being a railroad man he had a pass and in 1958 the whole family took
a trip to California on the train. Docia lived in Van Nuys then.
He grew up on a farm but farming had no appeal for him. Eleven when
his widowed father died, they soon left the country, but 'we' still
own it. One day while at the old farm he remarked that when a boy on
hot summer nights the boys would bring blankets out on the lawn and
lie under the stars, but when it was time to go to sleep. he was
always up and inside.
He said his father often patted him on the head, saying, "Precious
sweet, precious good."
He could go to sleep in his chair in no time (even quicker!). And how
he could snore!
