- Springwater, N.Y. — Edward Holmes Jr., 86, of Springwater, died peacefully Saturday at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Ed was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Springwater, a son of Edward and Anna (Schubmehl) Holmes Sr.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1945 to 1948. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1948 and retiring in 1967. He was also a welder at Foster Wheeler Corp. in Dansville.
He married Alta C. Wagner on Dec. 5, 1951; she survives.
In addition to his parents, Ed was also predeceased by a son, Dennis Edward Holmes, in 2001; a sister, Margaret Mueller; and a brother, Harold Holmes.
Ed was a member of Wayland American Legion and a past member of the Masonic Lodge in Panama.
He enjoyed tinkering with cars, country music and watching westerns on television.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alta; one daughter, Elaine (Kenneth) Frew; two sons, Kenneth Holmes and John Timothy (Theresa) Holmes; a daughter-in-law, Kym Holmes; 10 grandchildren, Kristin and Ashley Holmes, Melissa (Ryan) Henchen, Maria (Dan) Staub, Monica Frew, Royce Holmes, Rebecca Holmes, Capt. Jason Holmes, Matthew Holmes and Nathan Holmes; four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Emily Henchen, Dominick Staub and Grayson Frew Humprey; his sister, Virginia White; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. Thursday at the Chamberlin – Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St., Dansville, with a memorial service and full military honors at 4 p.m.
