- CHAPIN, S.C. — Memorial service for Lt. Col. Fred E. Kiehle, Jr. U.S.M.C. (Ret.), 91, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Bat Cave, N.C. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, is assisting the family.
Lt. Col. Kiehle died Saturday, October 22, 2011. Born in Dansville, N.Y., he was the son of the late Fred E. Kiehle, Sr. and Isabelle Lortz Kiehle. After spending his childhood in West Palm Beach, Fla., he graduated from Stetson University and received a JD from the University of Florida. He served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring after 23 years of service. Following his retirement, he taught for ten years at Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach. He retired to Gerton N.C., where he was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave, N.C., serving as Senior Warden.
Surviving are his son, Fred E. Kiehle III of Atlanta; grandsons, Andrew J. Kiehle of Marietta, Ga. and Tyler C. Kiehle of New Orleans. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances M. Twitty Kiehle.
Interment will be in Bearwallow Cemetery Gerton., Hendersonville County., North Carolina.
