Mrs. Effie M. Curtin, 68, Died In Sleep After Illness Of Two Weeks

Mrs. Effie M. Curtin, 68, widow of Emmett R. Curtin, Sr., died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday in the family home, 931 W. Market-st. The end came peacefully while she slept.

The popular Lima woman, who accompanied her prominent husband thru his rise to fame from the humble place of oil field worker to one of the leading bankers and oil and gas company operators in this territory, had been seriously ill for the last two weeks. For more than eight years, however, she had been in ill health that curtailed her activities. Death resulted from heart disease.

Mrs. Curtin was born in Allentown, N.Y., a town which was named after her father who founded the community. Her parents both have been dead for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Curtin attended a primary school in Allentown and was graduated from a high school there. The Curtins were married in Belmont, N.Y., July 26, 1891.

After the marriage, Curtin, in following the westward trend of the oil field activities, came to the Lima area.

In 1910 the Medina Gas and Oil Co., which her husband helped organize, made a contract with the then Lima Natural Gas Co. which brought Curtin and his wife to this district.

For a while Mr. and Mrs. Curtin lived in Findlay while he was associated with the Ohio Oil Co. After several years, the family moved to St. Marys where Curtin was named superintendent of the Manhattan Oil Co. Subsequent operations by her progressive husband brought the Curtins to Lima where the family home has been located ever since.

Mrs. Curtin was a member of Christ Episcopal church. Activities in the parish, in addition to the oft repeated phrase "my husband and son first," were Mrs. Curtin's primary aims in life.

Emmett Curtin, Jr., who formerly was president of the West Ohio Gas Co. and followed in his father's footsteps in oil and various other business enterprises, is the sole survivor. Four nephews, Allen Brady, of Toledo, who is connected with the federal revenue office, and Guy Allen, of Tulsa, Okla., an associate of the National Supply Co.; Harold and Max Loveless, both of Bradford, Pa., as well as Brady's son, James A., Jr., also survive.

Last rites for Mrs. Curtin will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the 931 W. Market-st home. The Rev. Richard O. Petersen, rector of the church of which she was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.

Pallbearers, named by Mrs. Curtin before her death, probably will be Dr. Harvey Basinger, Benjamin S. Motter, L. B. Merritt, Wallace H. King, Harry Wright, Jr., J. F. Solomon, H. L. Solomon and Frank G. Kahle.

The services is to be directed by the Davis, Miller and Son mortuary.

    Notes:

Two Killed in Crossing Accident Near Wellsville. No Chance to Stop Automobile on Slippery Road in Time to Avoid Being Hit by Train.
Another grade crossing accident resulting in the death of two men, was tragic Sunday news in Wellsville, COLA L. SISSON of Almond, and ALFRED L. STUBBS, of Auburn, were instantly killed on the Erie crossing in the Proctor District, when their automobile was struck by west bound Erie train 7. The accident occurred at 10:30 o'clock, Erie train 7 running about on time was speeding into Wellsville at a fifty mile clip. The Proctor crossing is two miles east of Wellsville station and there is an open view of the track from either direction. Mr. Stubbs was driving a Ford sedan and Mr. Sisson was sitting along side of him. Evidently the men did not notice the approach of the train from behind until almost upon the crossing, although the engineer had seen the car and was blowing the whistle sharply, trying to warn them. The driver evidently attempted to stop the Ford sedan within a few feet of the track, applying the brake and pushing on the reverse foot lever. The car was seen to approach within a few feet of the crossing, skid around on the slippery road and then back directly onto the track in train [sic]. The car caught on the front of the locomotive, was torn into small pieces and carried for hundreds of yards, Sisson being thrown out about 300 yards from the crossing, while a portion of the wreckage was cleaned off by the trainmen when the train stopped nearly 500 yards from the crossing Mr. Stubbs, the driver, had been forced through the enclosed car and was sitting on the pilot of the engine but dead when the train stopped. The train was fortunately stopped near a railroad telephone booth in the yard limit and the Erie station was called and orders received to back the train up, where the body of Mr. Sisson was removed from the railroad embankment, placed on a stretcher and taken into the baggage car. Mr. Stubb's body was left on the pilot of the engine and the train proceeded to the Wellsville station, where undertaker EMBSER took charge of the remains and removed them to his rooms on West State street. Corner [sic] COOLEY arrived a few minutes later and examined the property of the dead men, thus arriving at their homes in Almond and Auburn. The accident was almost beyond explanation. Mr. Sissons was familiar with the road and must have realized he was approaching the crossing and despite of the snow falling at the time, there was a good sight of the approaching train, the track and the road running parallel for half a mile. Evidently the men were deep in conversation and did not realize the train was on them until within a few rods of the crossing and in applying the foot brake and reverse pedal, caused the car to slew around and back onto the track. Portions of the car were strewn alongside the railroad for a quarter of a mile and the car reduced to bits of scrap iron and kindling wood, with the exception of the front end, which was evidently carried on the pilot of the engine and when removed the headlights were intact and the glass and headlights unbroken. Both men were instantly killed, Mr. Sisson's body being terribly mangled, the left leg broke in ten places and the body finally thrown clear of the wreckage before the train stopped. Will HALLADAY living on the Proctor road, and some 300 yards east of the crossing, was in the back yard cutting wood. he noticed the car go by, traveling at not more than 20 miles an hour and thought it was a neighbor. Only a few minutes elapsed when train 7 came whistling by his house, the whistle loudly tooting and he looked up just in time to [rest of story missing]

    Notes:

Charline Jurgens, age 91, of Milbank died March 10th at St. William's Care Center.

Charline Mary (Allen) Jurgens was born March 10, 1917, in Milbank, SD. She was the daughter of Charles and Margaret (Rowan) Allen. She attended St. Lawrence Catholic School and graduated from Milbank High School in 1935. She worked in the Welfare Office at the Grant County Court House until her marriage on September 6, 1937, with Edward H. Jurgens.

Charline was a woman of contrasts. She was ladylike … and opinionated. She lived by the Ten Commandments, yet she was loving and tolerant of those who did not keep them. She was frugal and generous. She was not a talker, but she was a masterful communicator. She was full of humility, but intensely proud of her children and grandchildren.

Charline was what many today would consider a domestic artist. A spotless home, and particularly a warm kitchen, was her canvas. She was known for her specialties: dill pickles, strawberry jam, banana bread, peanut cookies and the highly sought-after peanut croquettes. It is a rare person who can work such magic with the simplest of ingredients. If it is possible to show love by doing for others, Charline exhibited incredible love for her family and friends every minute that she was slicing, stirring, chopping, boiling and baking. We are all so fortunate to have enjoyed her love, sweet enough to taste.

Charline was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and was active with the Altar Society. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Charline Jurgens is survived by two daughters: Ann and husband James Bryan of Sun City West, AZ and Teresa and husband Dick Skaarer of Milbank; two sons: Dick and wife Robbie Jurgens of Watertown, SD and Michael wife Tracy Jurgens of Aberdeen, SD; one daughter-in-law: Barbara Jurgens of Brandon, SD; 19 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren; one brother, Lyle Allen of Braham, MN; two sisters-in-law: Joyce Allen of Milbank and Donna Schuneman of Scotts Bluff, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, David, three sisters: Joyce, Betty, and Helen and two brothers, Jim Allen and Claire Schuneman.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, March 13th at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. Father Ken Lulf will officiate and burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery. Con-celebrants will be Father John McMullen, OSB and Father Matthew Kowalski, OSB.

Honorary bearers will be her granddaughters: Kristi Bickelhaupt, Kari Kraemer, Lori Essig, JoAnna Olson, Jennifer Jurgens, Liza Holbert, Abby Kemp, and Cali Skaarer.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Mark Bryan, Jon Bryan, Tom Bryan, Tony Jurgens, Thad Jurgens, Tyler Jurgens, Mitch Jurgens, Josh Jurgens, Dan Jurgens, Eric Jurgens, and Isac Skaarer.

Edith Allen Perished in the Flames at Bolivar This Morning.
Bolivar, Dec 24 - [Special] - Flames broke out in the double dwelling occupied by four families between 5 and 6 o'clock this morning. One part was occupied by families named Dean and Aldenburg and the other half by a family named Burdick and another whose name cannot be learned. It seems to have been caused by an over-pressure gas, and was discovered in Burdick's part. All this part was burned and nothing saved. Edith Allen, a little girl four years old., step-daughter of the gentleman whose name cannot be learned, perished in the flames. The remains are now at the undertakers. Both fire companies responded promptly to the alarm and did good work saving a house across the street which was twice on fire. There was no insurance so far as can be learned.

    Notes:

Polly(Mary Stanley) graduated from Hornell High School in 1920. She lived with her aunt, Mrs. John Stanley, after the death of her mother in 1905. She was said have had a very tough time as a little girl, living with her mothers family, having to hear about how "improper those Allen's are." Audrey Allen, said that Grandma was not even aloud to play with the neighbor kids because she was an Allen. Grandma never mentioned anything about her father having been Divorced before marring her mother. This was look down upon at the time and may have been why her parents went to Steuben County to get married by a Justice of the Peace. Grandma always spoke highly of her father and of his third wife Edith Jotry. She so wanted to go and live with them, but from what I understand, they were always traveling and it would be no place for a little girl, so she was told.

1910 living with his grandfather Andrew Allen in Alfred. Miles was employed by Seymour G. Stewart in West Almond, as a farm laborer, according to the 1920 census of West Almond. He was said, Audrey Pettibone, to have been living with his half-sister, Grace Farnum, in Wellsville at the time of his death. Miles was killed in an oil refinery fire in Wellsville. A story relayed to me by Audrey Pettibone from her uncle(Lionel), who know Miles, said that about every Saturday night there was a dance and one night a deputy sheriff came and caused alot of grief for everyone. The Deputy was apparently not well liked by everyone. Never-the-less, some words were spoken and Miles hit the Deputy with his fist, knocking the Deputy out cold. Miles spent the next three days in jail. Under normal circumstances, Miles could have been fired from his job for such an incident, but his boss kept him on. Unfortunately, he was killed not long after.
