    Notes:

After growing up in Fremont he married Florence, and they moved to Rochester where they lived until 1930, upon removing to Hornell,NY. He took a job with Peck Motors in Hornell and was an auto mechanic ther for 14 years. In 1948 he established his own auto mechanic business, "Auto Specialized Service," retiring from his business in 1967. During ownership of that business he employed his cousin, Charles Davis as well as Florence's nephew, Bernard Smith Sr., who he later sold the shop to. Bernard went inot partnership with his son, Bernard Jr, who currently (1995) is in partnership with his son, Bradley Smith. The business is now located in Arkport,NY and still carries the name that Murry gave to it. He was custodian at the Hornell Masonic Temple from 1967 to 1984. He was a past master of Evening Star Lodge No.44 F&A.M. in Hornell, a past high priest of Steuben Chapter No.101 Royal Arch Masons in Hornell, a past master of the former Big Creek Grange and was a member and past president of the St.Paul's United Church of Christ. Murray would often "call" at square dances in the Hornell/Big Creek area and many times at Demons Ponds Dance Hall in Howard. He would also play his fiddle(violin) whenever he was asked. He was an avid golfer all his life and was known for his "straight shot, right down the middle". There is a tee maker for the 12th hole at Twin Hickory Golf Course in Hornell that has been named in his memory. In July, 1955 they began proceedings to adopt a then 3 moth old baby girl, Elizabeth Ann. Florence stayed at home to raise their daughter. Florence and Murray were involved in a motor vehicle accident on November 27, 1987 in the town of Hornellsville. Murray was driving their car and was broadsided by an oncoming vehicle. He was killed instantly and Florence was rushed to St.James Hospital in Hornell where the operated. She was in and out of consciousness for the next 30 hours, but passed away at noon on Sunday. On December 2, 1987, they were laid to rest, together, in the Howard Cemetery, beside Murray's mother and father.

Murray married Florence Della Reigelsperger on 30 Mar 1925 in Wayland, Steuben Co., New York, USA. Florence (daughter of George John Reigelsperger and Flora May Tucker) was born on 23 Oct 1900 in Wayland, Steuben Co., New York, USA; died on 29 Nov 1987 in Hornell, Steuben Co., New York, USA; was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Howard, Steuben Co., New York, USA. Eulogy for Beatrice K. Smith August 8, 2000
    Rev. Richard R. Hubbard

Dear family and friends, we gather here this afternoon to celebrate the life of Beatrice Smith. We give thanks to God that hers was a long and rich life, busy and active until the end. She and her husband, Herman, can rest easy that they leave a living legacy of their three daughters, Dorothy, Marian and Nancy, and their husbands and eleven,
grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren'. From a biblical perspective, they were truly blessed.
I am thankful that when I first met Bea, she was very much alive. Indeed, her vigor and wit seemed to belie her age. I had been warned that Bea could be a ?woman of strong opinions". One would need to be to make it to 96, still full of vigor and vitality. My impression, at the end was that the time had come. S he had lived her life as fully as possible, for as long as possible. Neither age nor immobility dampened her interest in life and those around her. Her vitality alone should inspire us when we start to feel older and tireder...
I asked the family for some help in telling the story of her life. She grew up on the family farm in Hornell. One can only guess at the changes she saw around her over the course of her lifetime, from horse and buggy to automobiles, from wood stoves to electric range, yet with others of her generation she took it in stride. With five brothers and two sisters, she never lacked for company, though privacy was probably hard to come by.
She married Herman Smith, a mold maker at Ingersoll Rand, in 1922. They had four children, Dorothy, Marian, Nancy and Clair. Clair, the only son, died in the early 1970's. We pray that he is now gathered with his mother and father in that heavenly mansion.
I was told that Bea was quite a baker, who as a homemaker, augmented the family income by baking bread and rolls every Friday, and never had any left over. She also took in washings to help, and being a farm girl and one of eight children, was no stranger to hard work. After her children were grown she worked at the Corning Hospital laundry, retiring in 1968. And through the years in Painted Post, she was an active and dedicated member of the Methodist Church. Rev. Jack Bunde, the Chaplain at Coming Hospital, said Bea always faithfully attended his services, and loved to sing hymns (which proves she was a real Methodist at heart). .
It was hard for her to leave her home. Is it ever easy for anyone? To leave behind a lifetime of memories, the scene of so many of the chapters of one's life. But change is always a part of our lives. We are all sojourners on a journey of life and time.
She moved to Green Meadows, where she enjoyed playing cards, hopefully not on Sundays. (Smile. I'm joking.) She enjoyed visiting with the friends and especially appreciated that her granddaughter, Janice Montgomery, worked there and woke her up each morning.
After breaking her ankle and time at Arnot Ogden and Coming Hospitals she moved to Founders Pavilion, where she needed rehabilitation. She made progress, but now needed a wheelchair. Some people might have given up, or withdrawn, but not Bea. She kept as busy as ever and enjoyed playing checkers and games with Randy Dann. I am told that on a trip to Niagara Falls, he introduced her to a group of men as Miss America 1918. From what I hear she gave as good as she got. She was alert, very much alive.
She enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She kept busy knitting, crocheting and, of course, playing cards and check.ers. Reportedly she hated to lose, but that's true of most of us. We'd rather win than lose, at the games we play. I think it would be fair to say Bea loved the playing as much as the winning, the fun, the friendship and fellowship that games can provide.
We all have our favorite foods and hers was maple walnut ice cream. It would be nice if the next time you have maple walnut ice cream you think of Bea, a reminder, a remembrance of a life rich in the things that truly matter: family, friends and faith.
    Time for family remembrance
It is hard to say good-bye to those we love, to let them go, to leave them in God's hands. But surely Bea's life was rich and blessed, full to the very end. So this afternoon I ask that you remember the life and love you shared, your times together, your shared joy and laughter as well as hurts and sorrow. None of us are perfect. We do the best we can, and some things we may do better than others. Now is the time to remember the best of Bea's life: her love of life, her love of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, her friends at Founders, Green Meadows, Corning Hospital, Painted Pos, her faith that gave her hope, strength and the courage to carry on faith and as active on our lives as she was in hers.
Let us pray. Almighty God, we give you thanks for the life of Beatrice Smith, for the life and love she shared with her family and friends, for her force of will and vitality of life, for long years and rich memories. Amen.

During that portion of her life she was not only a wife and mother, but a worker in the fields and preparer of meals for the entire farm crew. When Abby left the farm she became a village resident, a Churchville-Chili School Bus driver and part of the Riga Free Library staff. She loved to play baseball and horseshoes; but just as much as she enjoyed the world of music-playing the violin in The Trio, or 'fiddling' for square dances. She was an avid Contract Bridge player, a worker of crosswords puzzles and a woman who never tired of reading, weather it was poetry for her own enjoyment or reading to children to broaden their outlooks. Through all her life, Abby's faith remained strong. It was in her church that she found the strength she needed to deal with what came her way.

Steuben County News Service - "Couple Flees Burning Home"
Dairy farmer Shirley Burdett and his wife escaped to safety early yesterday with only the clothese they wore as fire destroyed their two story brick home on Route 70 at Big Creek, about four miles west of Howard. A lapse in telephone service delayed summoning fireman. Temperatures were below zero as Fremont and Howard fireman battled the blaze, finally reported at 6:45AM. A family spokesman said the couple was asleep in the downstairs bedroom and apparently was awakened by the roar of the flames. They got out of the house in their nightclothes through a front entrance, the spokesman said. Nothing was saved from the house, he said. The couple lived there alone. The Burdetts, after fleeing their home, drove to the nearby home of Stanley Drumm. Drumm, a son and son-in-law started for the Burdett place and encountered state police investigating an auto accident on Route 70. The trooper radioed for firefighters. The inside of the house was just one big ball of fire when we got there, said Fremont Fire Chief Richard Smith. He said cuase of the fire and amount of damages were not determined. The Burdetts were staying with a relative.

    Notes:

HORNELL-Herman M. Davis, 84, of 166 Leach Ave., passed away Saturday evening (Dec. 19, 2009) at Hornell Gardens surrounded by the family he loved so much. Herm took God's hand and peacefully walked away. His family has lost our beloved "Grandpa Herm."

He was born on June 1, 1925 in the town of Howard to Lewis and Mildred Burdett Davis.

Herm lived his entire life in the Hornell area and attended the one room schoolhouse his mother taught in and graduated from Hornell High School in 1942. After graduating from high school, Herm continued working on the family farm on the Big Creek Road in the town of Howard with his father. For many years he also ran a milk route.

On Nov. 14, 1964 Herm married the former Erla McGregor and together they raised five children.

In 1968 he began his employment at the Foster-Wheeler Corp. in Dansville, retiring in 1987 with 19 years of service. After retiring he was employed as guard at the former M-K Corporation in Hornell and later worked as the "handyman" at the former Maple Crest Manor in Hornell where the staff and residents lovingly called him "Mr. D."

Although he had stopped farming many years ago, you could never truly take the farmer out of him. After moving from the farm, for many years he continued to plant a garden there and always enjoyed helping his son, Earl, once he began running the farm again. Herm's love of farming was exceeded only by the love he had for his family.

For many years he was a member of the Big Creek Grange and the Howard Masonic Lodge. He was also a youth fellowship leader at the Big Creek Church and sang in a quartet with his father, his brother, Charles and his uncle, Elmer Burdett.

Herm's soft-spoken nature and gentle spirit made him a friend to all who knew him. He was a treasure to his family and a gift to anyone that knew him. He will be truly missed.

Besides his wife of 45 years, his family includes his five children, Earl (Chris) MacNaughton, Kay (Nathan) Cornell, Carl (Denise) MacNaughton, Laurie (Mike) Whiteman all of Hornell and Jeff (Jessica) Davis of Bath; his 12 grandchildren, Claire (Kevin) White, Shawn and Shad MacNaughton, Andrea (Chris) Muhleisen, Michael Cornell, Matthew and Mitchell MacNaughton, Josh and Madison Whiteman and Eli, Jonas and Catherine Davis; his four great-grandchildren, Arden and Adrianna White and Jaxson and Kenny Muhleisen; his brother, Charles (Laura) Davis of Etna, NY; his sister, Dorothy Smith of Hornell; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents.

At Herm's request there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 23) at the Arkport Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Steven Jewell officiating. Private committal services and interment will be held at the convenience of his family at Rural Cemetery, Hornell.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations in Herm's name be made to either the Hornell Area Humane Society, PO Box 533, Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Arkport Presbyterian Church, PO Box 6, 15 Main St., Arkport, NY 14807.

Our family would like to thank Vicki Burns and the wonderful staff at the Hornell Gardens who so compassionately and lovingly cared for Herm in his final days.

    -Artist Statement

The things that I find interesting about painting or what my paintings are about, is not something that I often think about. I just make them. When asked to think about it, I would say they are made of something that did not exist exactly like that before. They are perhaps a rearrangement of the 'ordinary' and 'usual' into another form of reality. A realm where I am willing to release, a spontaneous and intuitive picture of my feelings. If you will, an outward manifestation of those feelings. Probably most people do that when they are dreaming or describing something with great feeling.

My Paintings have evolved over time and now reflect my reactions to nature, pushed beyond, or in a different direction from a purely representational world. I am drawn to paint the forces and material things of nature which I have come to know and respect after many years of direct experience. This knowledge of nature, however seems not to be overtly, conscious when I am doing a painting. In an abstract and metaphorical way, it is more a sense of being a reservoir of energy which enables me to paint what I paint. It is seemingly a motivating force, which like all of nature, is full of image possibilities and offers, in addition, the chance appearances of key elements that go into making an interesting painting, if I am ready at that moment to recognize them and retain them.

I like to paint spontaneously, because it carries the freshness of chance and a deep, sincerity of expression. Plus, I never know for certain where it will lead and that offers real excitement and an element of surprise for me, as well. I work in a flurry of activity followed by periods of sitting and looking at what has just transpired, in contemplation of the next move. There are waves of opportunity, in which to make choices, and perhaps the most difficult moment in painting for me, comes when it's time to say, it is finished and to walk away from it. It takes a lot of doing painting, to know and to recognize, with a feeling of confidence, what that place should look like. I work on that problem regularly. It is the essence of painting.

My work is not intended to be at all linear, in the sense that this statement is a juxtaposition of various symbols. Symbols do appear in my work but they are by chance meeting of lines and images or only because they offer strong visual presence in a particular spot for no particular reason, except for having chosen it. In terms of my painting direction, I continue to work with the hope and goal of reaching my own peculiar level of simplification.

  71. 164.  Heather Lee MacKenzieHeather Lee MacKenzie Descendancy chart to this point (65.Robert4, 20.James3, 4.Anna2, 1.Huldah1) was born on 25 Oct 1960 in Syracuse, Onondaga Co., New York, USA; died on 17 Dec 2013 in Conesus, Livingston Co., New York, USA.

    Notes:

Heather M. Wester of Conesus, December 17, 2013, surrounded by her loving family, passed peacefully after 53 incredible years of life. Heather faced her battle with Leukemia much like she lived her life; with faith, determination, humor and seemingly impossible grace. She is predeceased by her parents Robert Sr. & Patricia MacKenzie. Survived by her beloved husband Donald Wester; children, Faith and Nathan Wester. Brother Robert (Robin) MacKenzie Jr., brother-in-law Charles (Laurie) Wester and sister-in-law Deborah (David) McNicholas. Many nieces & nephews and friends
A lover of the outdoors, on any given day, Heather could be seen waterskiing on Conesus Lake, kayaking the Genesee River, skiing the slopes of mountains across the country, cycling with the Livingston Cycling Club, snowmobiling through the woods, hiking with her children, walking with neighbors, tending her beautiful flower gardens or simply enjoying the warm sun on her deck with loving family and friends. Heather also loved back road adventures, top down in the convertible, hand in hand with her best friend and husband, Don.
Her energetic personality and passionate nature extended into her career as well. Earning a Masters Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University, she worked for Hillside Family of Agencies for over 25 years and was also a private Mental Health Provider. Heather was known to stand up for what she believed in and displayed unwavering dedication to her life’s work.
Heather’s impact, and selflessness was seen in every avenue of her life. Her success in her career was overshadowed however, by her success as a mother, wife, and friend. A warm smile, a tender hug, and endless love awaited all who had the pleasure of sharing in her company. She valued trust, honesty, courage, commitment, and family. She showed us how to love openly without judgment, how to let go of grudges and preconceived notions, how to appreciate each individual’s uniqueness, and above all things, how to love unconditionally. Forever a mother and friend to us all… SHMILY
Friends and family may call Friday 4-8 PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Routes 15 & 20A, Livonia. 97. 190.  Alan Duncan Munro Descendancy chart to this point (74.Alan4, 24.Ethel3, 5.Mary2, 1.Huldah1) was born on 3 Apr 1952 in Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, USA; died on 30 Jan 2021 in Keizer, Oregon, USA.

    Notes:

Alan Duncan Munro, recently of Keizer, Oregon lost his long battle with cancer and Alzheimer's disease, on January 30th, 2021. He was born on April 3,1952 in Shelburne, Vermont. He is survived by his loving parents, Alan and Constance "Connie" Munro, long time residents of Juneau, AK. He is also survived by his wife of 37 years, Melanie Munro and their only son Scott, currently of Keizer, Oregon.

He was a loving big brother to his siblings; Donald Munro of Seattle, WA, Peter Munro of Juneau, Carol Munro-Scribner of Pahoa, HI, Jean Munro of Des Moines, WA, and Meg Smith of Palmer, AK. He was preceded in death by his brother, Scott Munro and his life long friend and brother-in-law Frank Nowlin, who introduced him to his wife Melanie, 40 years ago. He also has a myriad of in-laws, outlaws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that he loved dearly! Duncan moved from Vermont, to New York City and then Nashville, TN in 1968, where he lived until he and his wife made the cross country trek to Juneau in 1984. He and his family moved to Oregon in 2010, where he resided until his death.

Duncan retired in 2007, after 22 years with the State of Alaska, starting in Community and Regional Affairs then moving to various positions at Fish and Game, Retirement and Benefits, and retiring at the Department of Labor. He had previously worked at the State of Tennessee for 13 years. While there he made the National Enquirer while attempting to enforce the new Highway Beautification Act and called "a pea brained bureaucrat", which tickled him immensely!

He was proud of his Scottish and Italian heritage. His mother and father were adopted by a loving Tlingit family, Duncan was proud of his Raven culture too. He loved fishing in Alaska! He prided himself on getting his limit each trip. Never had a bad day fishing! He was also interested in local, state and global politics and loved a good debate, especially with his parents! His family loved him dearly and are deeply saddened by his illness and passing. He fought hard for over six years and his family will miss him but are happy his passing was peaceful and faithful.
